The long-awaited fight between Canelo Alvarez, the linear middleweight champion, and unbeaten WBA/WBC/IBF champion Gennady Golovkin has been agreed upon by both sides – though you're going to have to wait to see it.
Sources confirmed to Yahoo Sports on Wednesday that Alvarez and Golovkin will meet in September 2017.
The agreement was reached in a meeting in Los Angeles between Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya and K2 Promotions' Tom Loeffler. De La Hoya promotes Alvarez and Loeffler promotes Golovkin.
De La Hoya and Loeffler came to a handshake deal Wednesday in which they agreed to put off the long-awaited bout for 15 months.
That, a source said to Yahoo Sports, will allow Alvarez to get comfortable fighting as a fully fledged middleweight and to help Golovkin build his name.

The problem is that there are few compelling fights for Golovkin at 160 and he'd be heavily favored in nearly any match he'd take at that weight other than against Alvarez.
There are match ups every bit as difficult as Canelo out there at middleweight
By which I mean, guys that Golovkin would walk through....In exactly the same manner he will against Saul

Nobody can lay a glove on GGG at 160. Canelo, should the fight actually take place, will be the first likely to even have him raise a sweat.

Golovkin now aiming to fight in fall 2017 at earliest

Boxing fans again will have to play the waiting game for the fight they want to see most.
With the five-year wait for Floyd Mayweather to face Manny Pacquiao still fresh in the minds of many, a showdown between lineal middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez and unified titleholder Gennady Golovkin looms as boxing's biggest fight since -- but it won't happen until at least fall 2017.

Well Laddie Fuckin daa. Might as well make it 2018, or 19. As long as Canelo takes safe fights between now and then, which he will, it will make him some big $.

I share your pessimism. All this latest development really means is they won't meet in the next 14 months, and I think most of us had already come to that conclusion.

What a load of shite, he wanted a fight to get used to MW and then fought khan, then called GGG out in the ring, threw the belt like a hot potato to GGG saying he wouldn't be controlled by a deadline, now it's fall in 2017, this is Oscar trying to save face, he shook with his right hand and had his fingers crossed on his left

Canelo and De La Hoya are buying time. Get GGG when he's older and got more miles on the clock. That's if it ever actually happens of course.

Steve Kim had a long interview with Loefler today, and Tom mentioned September of 2017 as the earliest realistic date:

im okay with that until both of them can have AT LEAST 2 fights against top oponents:
Golovkin - Eubank jr, Jacobs, Saunders
Alvarez - Charlos, J. Williams, Andrade, or three middleweights which i wrote

They will stall the fight, hoping to get more and more miles on GGG's clock, or that he starts getting injuries.
This is already 14 months, add another 6 of faffing about, and hey presto, GGG is 37, and the wear and tear is catching up.
This smacks of avoidance to me.

This is just disgusting. Who knows if they will even fight after the 15 months. Boycott canelo, don't watch his fights. Ggg beat Saunders, Jacobs then move to super or light heavy and be bigger than de la Hoya ever imagined canelo could be. fornicating bullshit. I'm appaled.

This is absolutely absurd, what a joke. So much can happen in a year that a year would be unrealistic to 'set a date' for a fight, let alone close to 18 months.

Canelo and his team are doing exactly they same thing Povetkin tried to do with Wladimir Klitschko - wait until he gets older. Povetkin avoided that fight for 4+ years. And while Wlad probably became a liitle bit slower, he still beat Povetkin easily (albeit in ugly fight). I expect the same result from GGG - Canelo fight if it actually happens in September 2017 or even later. GGG will beat him comfortably, but in exciting fight.

I was never particularly interested in Canelo, but I thought him fighting Lara when he didn't have to really was impressive: just making a point of fighting the best.
This is pathetic. Let's just all call this what it is- a genuine obvious duck- and move on. Golovkin can unify without this little prick, and then move on. Surely this will hemorage Canelo some fans anyway, and squander any goodwill from those like me who weren't so sold on him in the first place.
Why call somebody out in the ring and then say "but in a year and a half" a month later?
Boxrec should just put Canelo in GGG's list of wins. They don't need to fight. Canelo has good as surrendered

What a sad ploy by Golden Boy and Canelo. They've obviously painted themselves into a corner and after one of his biggest victories, his image has taken a huge hit by dropping the belt and seemingly ducking the fight with GGG. The fans did a GREAT job staying in Canelo's face and not letting him get away like we let Floyd get away all of those years. Floyd has a different gear in which he could have spent his whole career dodging questions about not fighting Manny. He didn't care. Canelo cares too much. Floyd justified his dodging with huge paychecks he cashed. Money doesn't do it for Canelo.
So GB and Canelo think they can appease fans by saying they will fight GGG over a year from now and at 160. This is just getting more pathetic by the minute. I bet every one of them regret taking that low hanging fruit against Cotto. We'd never be on Canelo for not fighting GGG if he never snipped that title from Cotto. Canelo ended up tossing anyway so what was the point? This fight will never be made. If it does go off in late 2017, i'd be very surprised. This fight was steaming hot now and who knows how it will look next year this time. pretty sad.

The last line is hilarious. Please admins of Boxrec, please put this on GGG's record.

Loefler denied that there is any binding agreement:

DLH is just trying to save Canelo's face.

Canelo and ODLH have lost a lot of respect from me. I used to think of Canelo as a guy who would fight anybody (including Mayweather, Trout, Lara, Cotto) and ODLH as a fan's promoter who would put together the best fights possible no matter how risky. But this situation is just ridiculous. Canelo/GGG is probably the biggest and best fight that can be made at any weight right now. If it's not gonna happen due to financials, tell me that. Tell me the money isn't there. Tell me the cost/benefit analysis isn't right. But this garbage about the weight is absolutely laughable. You need 15 months to figure out how to sweat out 5 less pounds before the weigh-in? Talk about an insult to every fan's intelligence. They're pissing down our legs and telling us it's raining.

I don't care if the fight happens or not. F*ck Canelo. He's a coward and the rest of his career don't mean sh*t to me now.

Canelo and Golden boy are getting a lot of stick for this but I think Loeffler deserves more criticism than he's getting. He's basically agreed to Golovkin getting stiffed.
