Just been told that you don't have to do a trial spar anymore, does this mean it's a case of application, board meeting then medical and they then watch you spar or train now ?

Depends on the country. Some countries do, some you just switch over to pro.

Trial sparring was removed quite a few years ago by the BBBofC due to insurance cover. However they still watch the fighter training in the gym.

I turned pro in 96, didn't have anyone watch me spar or train and didn't meet with anyone from the board

I thought the Board only watched people spar that didn't have much Am Experience etc

Correct, this used to be the case. Now they watch them train in the gym instead.

Didn't realise it was only less experienced that used to trial spar. Does anyone feel that the easier route to now turning pro, plus the various other routes and organisations available, that it will lower the standard of professional licensed fighters? I know of 1 or 2 who have turned over with little white collar experience, and quite suprised they got pro licensed

I had a french fighter who was a French international in the ams and had about 3 pro fights in France, but they still had him do an assessment with board, 4 rounds of intense bag work, 4 rounds of body sparring and 4 rounds of pads.

I can vouch for that as I had one go through last week. Its experienced wise eyes doing the testing - and they know what they're looking for.

A lot of the experienced eyes have ties to the amateur gyms they are watching the applicants train in. Certainly in my area.
