I only managed to find highlights of Hope's 1st fight with Mattioli,Rocky retired on his stool after 8 citing an injured arm,he was put down in the opening round after about 10 seconds in,i'll give the rematch a watch later

3 rounds in this is shaping up to be a good one, hope jabbing insistently and landing occasional left hands, mattioli trying to pressure and throw the right hand off the bob and weave.

Lol at that idiot Cosell talking to someone off-camera between rounds like he often did, 'what? Hope is killing him. What? The right eye?' Etc.
Also, anyone else notice how feckin *tiny* these two look. They'd be dwarfed by most modern welters.

Hope takes one of the most sustained beatings to the body that I have seen, an underrated element for Benitez, its wince-inducing

Hope vs Mattioli
1. 10 - 9 - Hope. Not much happened, Hope controlling it with the southpaw jab.
2. 10 - 9 - Hope. Mattioli showing more ambition and aggression, but Hope did just enough. I'd like to see him throw the left uppercut when Rocky comes in low.
3. 9 - 10 - Mattioli - Great round, lot's of good shots from either man. Hope over reliant on jabs and straight shots. I think a right hook round the jab or the uppercut I mentioned would have great effect
4. 10 - 9 Hope - Good round for Hope as he makes an arse of Davie, by using the right jab and straight left to keep Mattioli off him effectively
5. 10 - 9 - Hope - Switching very effectively from pushing Mattioli back to working of the back foot himself. Lovely bit of head movement in the corner to evade some shots about half way through the round.
6. 9 - 10 - Mattioli - Hope finding lot's of success with the straight left down the pipe, but towards the end, Mattioli countered it well and hurt Hope a few times, has to be Rocky's round
7. 10 - 10 So hard to score, Hope out boxing him in spells but not doing enough to discourage him or earn his respect, ih Rocky's shots looking the more hurtful, until the last 30 seconds where Hope rocks his head back 3 times. Good round
8. 10 - 9 - Hope - Big Hope round but still a couple hard punches landed by Mattioli at points.
9. 10 - 9 - Hope - Excellent round for Hope, if it hadn't been for a rally at the end by Mattioli, I'd have scored it 10-8
10. 10 - 9 - Hope - Slowed the pace with excellent movement, still in total control and landing whenever he wants with single shots
11. Stoppage by the referee. I was glad to see him step in, that round had become a one-sided beating

Howard Cosell was a goat, I'm always tempted to mute him when watching fights he commentated on, his voice is an irritation and the chatter between rounds there was getting ridiculous.
I didn't think these guys looked particularly small, but the 15 foot ring perhaps played it's part in making them look bigger

I enjoyed the Mattioli rematch,it was closer than i thought it would be,i had it even after 6 with Hope pulling away,still Rocky never stopped marching forward and always looked dangerous especially with the right hand,Maurice's southpaw jab was excellent though as was his footwork,he showed great lateral movement shifting side to side in such a small ring making Mattioli miss,Hope finding the target more and more in that 11th round with Mattioli struggling to get out of the way of the punches,it didnt look as if much actually landed when the ref stepped in but Rocky was eating left crosses before and there were no complaints

Sums it up pretty well.
I was convinced, a couple rounds in, that the persistent jabbing tactics were going to come undone.
With Mattiolli marauding in, dropping low and swing away, I thought he had his strategy all wrong and felt he needed to mix it up.
You'll notice I made a few suggestions of how Hope could rectify this.......
Only for him to make a complete arse of me, by persevering with the strategy to great effect and eventually dominating the fight using the jab as his main weapon.
Ach well, you can't be right all the time

Watched the Bonnetaz fight,just a routine win for Hope,good show of dismantling a fighter below his level,i think the timekeeper might have been on the sauce though,the 1st round lasted under 2 minutes and im pretty sure the 4th was quick too
That was the 1st ever European LMW title fight held in the UK,also it was the undercard of Minter/Finnegan which some of us watched recently,also Joel Bonnetaz had a win over a faded Emile Grifith
