A dog walker was jailed for life today for murdering a former amateur boxer in a row over their pets on a golf course. The argument between two weekend dog walkers ended in the death of Alan "Ollie" Oliver, 62, who worshipped his two dogs.
Mr Oliver was stabbed in the back after a confrontation with 42-year-old David Reid, who was also walking two dogs at White Webs golf course in Enfield, north London.
Reid, unemployed, from Enfield, had told Oliver he should muzzle his dogs and a fight broke out. Judge David Paget said he accepted Mr Oliver, who had represented Scotland as an amateur, was the fitter man and had punched Reid several times.
But Reid should not have had a knife with him. "You chose to use it with deadly consequences. It was a deliberate act of revenge."

Incidenally, I forgot to add in the report that Oliver kept himself in great shape, which is why he was fitter than his 20-years younger adversary.

What a sad world we live in.

People who carry knives more often than not end up getting stabbed themselves, that's the only saving grace.

It's worrying that you are quite likely to meet your end from some skanky 15 year old with knife, rather than some big bruiser who will more than likely just give you a thourough kicking and leave it at that.

I have to say, generally I find violence abominable, which is what pisses me off when people who know nothing about boxing compare it to brawling in the street, the two couldn't be more different.

That's right. Violence is uncontrolled. Boxing is controlled. And when occasionally, just occasionally, a fighter loses that control, fight fans are the first to cry foul.
It must have confused politically-correct New Yorkers to hear fight fans chanting "lock him up!" after James Butler sucker-punched Richard Grant in New York in 2001.

If only more people understood that boxing is a science rather than just two men kicking fornicate out of each other it might be easier to attract fans. S

When Uppercut gets up and running, I might do a comparitive piece on the out of control violence in small towns around england, compared with the atmosphere in most boxing gymnasiums.

The reporter who got in the ring with Takaloo for a few minutes trying to hit him but couldn't touch him. That video footage says it all about the difference between boxing and a street fight!

Parky did that with Joe Frazier also, the actual wind of a miss punch put him down (genuinally).

I know, I get a lot of stick for watching a violent sport like boxing too. Not that it bothers me too much. How many boxing riots have you ever seen?

It is a shame, bet his dogs go out with muzzles in future though.
