Red Sox gave in to his demands to kill the fight. Babe still holds pitching and batting records that can never be broken in the dumbed down modern game, and Ali? No records, just hearts and minds of here to today, gone tomorrow faddish lite in the loafers fans.

FACT: Ruth was going to make $5000 for a fight against Gunboat Smith, about his yearly salary then when the average player was making $1-2000. The Red Sox had never faced someone with this kind of bargaining power and quickly reversed to sign Ruth to his salary demands much like Wilt got. Babe turned pro just after his 19th birthday at a well made 6-2, 185 lbs. He mostly played around the 200-215 mark until later in his career where he did indeed become permanently hogfat. After his famed bellyache heard round the world where his death was reported as far away as Britain, in his 30s he would spend winters training at Artie McGovern's gym as he trained very much like a fighter and reported to the 1926 RedSox in fighting shape as you can see. He sparred plenty and the heavybag was his favorite activity up there with bowling and golf.

My opinions are base upon facts and understanding of the eras and fighter timelines and can be considered inviolable compared to most of the infantile droolings on this forum as you just demonstrated.

Not to confuse you with the facts, but besides being a prolific homerun hitter, The Babe hit for average, I believe .342, had a great arm as a pitcher and a right fielder. Because The Babe could do it all from the plate and the mound, I rank him the best baseball player of all time. He probably would have been a good HW fighter, but I'm not going to make silly assumptions about sports people never played.

No... He had a MASSIVE strike zone... HIs talents were best suited for #1, Boxing... #2, Basketball.. He was also fabulous at Track & Field and Volleyball -- but not as outstanding as the 2 sports he had the most talent for.. You see.. He was a better individual athlete than a team player.. I had read (somewhere) that Babe Ruth had wanted to become a professional boxer after the Johnson vrs Jeffries bout in 1910.
and had wanted to become the Heavyweight Champion of the World.
He was still on 16 years old but had won 32 amateur bouts in a row by knockout.
Reportedly he had changed his mind after attending a brutal prizefight where one of the boxers ears
was ripped off by a punch and hanging by a strand of skin and the other boxer broke his jaw falling to the canvas.
So it sounds like he didnt have a stomach for the brutality involved and so then took up baseball.

It came on the market in 1921 and was named after the President's (Grover Cleveland) daughter.

The Babe stood 6 ft 2" tall and weighed about 215 lbs when he was 20 years old.
and BTW someone had to set the standard for the records to be broken in the future and that person was Babe Ruth.

I'm not saying this is wrong, but I've found no evidence that Ruth had amateur fights.

I don't really know either,I just read it in a newspaper article from August 1919.
(presumably the amateur bouts were at St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys in Baltimore Maryland)

You guys crack me up. Wilt Chamberlin. Wasn't he that basketball player? He had more chance of being a great ballerina than a good heavyweight boxer. Only reason why these skyscrapers are on top of the division today is because there are so many bums fighting now. Normal guys are playing ball or hockey, leaving the field to the freaks.

He wasn't THAT basketball player, he was THE basketball player & because of that, he would have easily beaten prime Muhammad Ali with six months training under Cus D'amato.
