I've only ever watched the American broadcast of this fight.

This British ITV broadcast (called by the wonderful Reg Gutteridge) is shot from a different section of the arena and also includes a slowmo at the end of round 7.

What a performance by the 35 year old Shavers. It speaks volumes of his terrifying power when you think how strongmen like Mercer, Holyfield and McCall couldn't deck a geriatric Holmes.

- Mercer had him hurt and slumping.

Rather finish him off in traditional fashion, the thuggish Mercer choked him out with one arm, only releasing him when the ref intervened, tossing him into the far corner like a rag doll choking and gasping for his life.

Another 20 sec and brain damage would've set in. A minute would have guaranteed death and there was no one readily available that could have prevented that but for Mercers rudimentary humanity kicking in. Holmes didn't win, but rather Mercer was penalized for that and other overtly thuggish actions.

Just think of what kimbo slice did to mercer and think of poor Lar hanging on the ropes tossing his guts out. I wouldn't even bring this up but for the level of wanks over this fight on this forum.

Earnie was inches off the KO with many of those swings after the KD. Glory days.

Mercer had Holmes reeling back in the 1st (briefly), having caught him square with a thudding jab - the rest of your post is the infantile fantasy drivel you are well known known for contributing here. Most people using BOTP remember Holmes/Mercer, or have the tape. Everyone has access to YouTube. Why waste your time?

It was a perfect punch on the chin, but Holmes was up quickly and later stopped Shavers... Holmes was too big and strong for Shavers to KO -- as were Ron Stander, Tex Cobb, Bernardo Mercado, Bob Stallings, Ron Lyle, Leroy Boone, and a bunch of other people Shavers couldn't knock out.

Makes you wonder how Earnie KOd Roy 'Tiger' Williams, who was bigger than all of them.

Shavers actually should have had another knockdown in that fight. He knocked Holmes down with a punch to the chest. The referee incorrectly called it a push.

But what was with the one strange follow up punch by Shaver's at about 28:32 ?
almost looked like he was going to try to slap a cream pie on the top of Holmes's head.

That was Shavers taking one of his monster swings and missing completely... He hit some lower caliber boxers with those cuts... He hit Ron Stander with a few monster swings like that... But Stander absorbed them all and knocked Earnie TFO!!!

Ron Lyle took some vicious hits too... because he wasn't the greatest defender either... Lyle took them all and bombed Earnie out.

If it's all the same to you, I'm keeping my currently held opinion that concurs with those who have actually felt Ernies punches.


Now.....I think he's still among the living right? Perhaps we could arrange for him to give you a sample so you'd be in a better position to offer an opinion. Though I imagine remembering it could prove challenging.

Did he hit as hard as Lewis, Wladimir, Joshua, Tyson, Ortiz, Wilder, Haye, Dempsey, and some other of History's heaviest punchers???? NO.. Because he couldn't get Lyle, Quarry, Stander, Cobb, Mercado, Stallings, and other strong chinned but easily punched guys out of there.

British ITV also had a different angle ring coverage broadcast of Muhammad Ali vrs Earnie Shavers as well.

Ron Lyle had said that Shavers hit harder then George Foreman.
So hard that it untied his shoe laces (and from a left if I remember correctly)
I think Shavers also decked Mercado with a left too.

I'm going to offer some help. Your examples don't hold water. They are as leaky as a sieve. Ernie hit hard...BUT because he lacked a few other skills, he could not use that fantastic power in a precision mode. Quarry didn't hit as hard, but he could use his precision timing to KO Ernie. It's not always about 1 single dimension of this sport. E.G. Height, Power....(some of your current hot topics) In my opinion it is often about how you can parlay the combination of talents you have. Wilt was a one dimensional fighter. He had height, and he knocked over a fellow BB player.....Hmmm let's call that 1/2 dimensional ....doesn't really qualify for full dimension. And Ernie was somewhat of a full fledged 1 dimensional fighter...but lordy could that man flatten a bear if he just got his bearings precise. So just because he couldn't get some of those guys out of there, and just because he got himself flattened a few times by others, does not decrease his legendary power one iota.

You're on fire with ridiculous excuses Buzz... You claim Shavers was 1-dimensional so he couldn't get big strong hittable guys out... Ridiculous... Power is what Foreman put on Lyle to knock him dead... Power is why Shavers TRIED to put on Lyle but the man was too big and strong for Shavers... Stander was one of the easiest Heavyweights to hit who ever got a World Title shot... He withstood everything Shavers threw and knocked him dead.

It was a lot different when guys a few inches taller than Shavers---who had bigger arms, legs, and shoulders---hit those same people... They went OUT!!!

And Chamberlain had a dozen dimensions ... Ali refused to sign the contract so he didn't get to show them off in the ring... Opportunity denied!!!

Well we all have our different dimensions.....some of us are direct from the Twilight Zone.....and that's a different dimension.....of sight, and sound....and ideas.

But never mind that.

You just did a good job of making MY point. Lyle was flattened a few times by Foreman, after flattening Foreman. And Foreman was just about that much better than shavers in the chin Dept. So he got up and finished what Ernie never had a chance to do. And really, the Lyle Shavers affair was going to end when the first one struck true paydirt. And to my mind, Lyle actually had a bit better of a chin than Shavers, so no real surprise. That could have gone the other way. And are you going to tell me that if you stick Shavers and Lyles together 3 times....Lyles wins them all?

If so, I'm going to tell you, nay nay.


.....PS....I hate my senior mind sometimes....it occurs to me....Lyle was saved by the bell. He was on gay street (used to be called queer street, but I'm becoming more politically correct) and the only thing that saved him was the bell. You do know that if Ernie would have got another crack at him in that early round...it would have been Ernies fight right? Or do you disagree with that?

Ernie just kept choppin wood and carryin water....and he carved out that victory handsomely.

Williams' 6h loss... He was never a contender and never beat a contender... Shavers was good puncher, but he hit this guy for 10 rounds before he got him out
