U.K's best fighters KO'd in sparring.

Post by KOJOE90 »

Over the years I'm sure we have all heard/read stories of some of our best fighters getting Ko'd in sparring.

Two that spring to mind are-

A young Lennox Lewis getting all but KO'd by the late Heavyweight journeyman Michael 'Tucker' Richards.

Comebacking Herol Graham getting KO'd by Howard Eastman.

Anyone else got any 'gym/sparring' stories of top UK fighter getting KO'd in the gym?.

Steve Collins blacking out before his comeback that never happend, not sure who was in the opposite corner. Anybody know what happend after that, I'm sure Collins went for a scan - what were the findings.

Scott Welsch getting his ribs broken by his trainer (who I think was the aformentioned Collins).

I think it was Howard Eastman (again!).

Was it Joe, although I don't think a meaningful punch was thrown (perhaps I'm wrong there).

Of course the other famous one I can think of is Danny Williams flatterning Herbie Hide.

Doesn't Danny Williams contend he knocked down Hide in sparring?

I think I am right in saying that Danny claims he Ko'd Hide in the build up to Hides fight with Vitali K.

Yep, and Vitali did it come fight time - I think it is more than a claim though do many people have seen it happen.

I was never sure if it was a claim, or just Danny shooting his mouth off. When they were building up to Williams vs Hide match, didn't they both claim they knocked the other one out? Or did Hide just claim it didn't happen?

He was due to fight Calzaghe wasn't he? I think that this incident was what eventually caused Eubank to step in.

The Collins collapse was definitely PRIOR to him sparring Eastman. No medical explanation was ever found. COllins packed it in, toyed with idea again about a year later, but came to his senses.

The Hide v Williams thing is fairly established and long running. I also heard Hamed knocked out John Keeton bare-fisted in a gym row.

Could be crap but you never know.

Heard that Mike Holden sparked out Roman Greenberg after he started showboating. Holden apparently walked out the ring saying 'Teach him to effing showboat with me'!!!

Half True.

Roman was showboating and out boxed Holden for six rounds.

At the end of the sixth round Roman stood in the ring centre and arrogantly turned to his corner for a conversation.

Holden hit him with a right and decked him. Roman got up and laughed.

Good shot by Holden though.

Kevin Lueshing getting chinned by Takaloo in Jim McDonnell's old gym in Camden, just after Jimmy Mac had taken Takaloo on.

Also, Takaloo putting Wayne Alexander out with a body-shot when they were both with Jimmy Tibbs. Tak had had about two or three bouts at that time whilst Wayne was the top-dog in the stable.

Doesn't bode well for Wayne on Sept 9

I think with Hide/Williams, Hide put Danny down, then Danny went for it, and laid Hide out cold for two minutes. Again, in Jimmy Mac's old place.

Tak totally starched Adrian Stone as well, just after Stone had come back from America a few years ago. Left hook, so I was told. Stone was in la la land for some time. Again, at Jimmy Mac's old Camden... den!

No, Collins pulled out and retired of the Calzaghe fight claiming a knee injury. The incident involving Eastman (who it must be) happend after that when he was mulling over a comeback. It was more than a passing thought I think a date had even been set for his comeback. It was his first full day of training when he passed out.

He saw it as a sign that something was wrong so scratched the idea.

You do never know, but I veer towards crap - a featherweight sparking a full-blown cruiser? I know Naz could punch like a mule, but still find this one stretching the boundaries of plausibility.

No, you're completely right. They've since 'made up' but Naz did land one on him allegedly.

Maybe it is true then. I know Jeff Fenech apparently stretched a 15 stone + bouncer in Vegas...

Silky had Darius M out on his feet at the matchroom back in the day.

Thing is about sparring, its exactly that, sparring.... it seems like Jimmy macs boys see it as much more as a fight...(although of course they are not alone)..

Interestingly Ovill Mckenzie was over sparring with Carl Froch before the Dodson fight, and he was thinking that Carl was really hitting hard...... turns out Ovill tells me Froch had 10oz gloves on.... Ovill had 16oz gloves, which is of course normal...

I'm not going to say Tak takes it easy in sparring as he does not, but the Leushing and Stone KOs all happened after they started unloading on Tak. Leushing retired after getting absolutely mullered (guy I used to work with went to the same school as Leushing and told me he was a right piece of work) and Stone too, got fresh, then got starched!
