Guzman returned home to a hero’s welcome in the Dominican Republic on Monday and was greeted by a large crowd of fans and a convoy accompanied him to his home. But after hours of celebration, the boxer found that the luggage that he stored the cash in had been opened and all $70,000 of his purse had been stolen.
Guzman’s promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz, confirmed the news with Yahoo Sports. According to Lewkowicz, Guzman attempted to carry on his recently won world title and luggage, but he was informed by airline staff that he needed to check one of his bags. Guzman decided to check in the bag with the money in it for the flight from Miami to Santo Domingo and, when he arrived, he realized that the money was gone.

Why the hell did he check in the bag with the money in it? I would've been holding onto that one like grim death.

Why did he take 70k in cash?
Come on, it's 2016, not 1976.

Crazy stuff!
I remember a similar thing happened to Roberto Duran years ago. From memory Duran lost a million dollars. Or at least he claimed he did anyway.

If you don't value it, someone else just might. I'm not sure how
the airline will handle this. What's the process to actually recover
his purse? Would it be the full amount?

Even if he took out travel insurance I hardly think they will believe he had $70,000 in his baggage. Let alone actually pay out on his claim.

This probably means Guzman will be eager to get back in the ring and make some money.

Incredibly stupid if he chose to keep a different bag with him on the flight.

Dominican republic is almost 3rd world, I'll bet lots of people still deal in cash regularly.
I know people in the UK who don't have a bank account, though that's another story.
