middleweight dream fight

golovkin is seen - by me - as a kind of Gerald Mclellan. ie a big puncher/fighter brought over to destroy a top brit. can nigel repeat his greatest night by upsetting the odds and KO-ing GGG in a tear up?

GGG by ko, I say this as a huge Benn fan but his poor defence and Golovkins superior footwork would spell bad news for Benn, would be fun while it lasted though

Golovkin has the lot to my casual eye. Not ashamed to admit I’ve only seeb about 2 of his fights but read some too....top class amateur pedigree, this is not just some puncher.
Based on his pedigree, temprament, intellectual ability and power, I would say Golovkin could outbox Benn.....much the same way that The People’s Champ did, in fact.

And I think Golovkers would have chinned the Yank, McClellan, for what it’s worth. Some kids you don’t bully.

GGG by knockout. Worst possible opponent for Benn IMO

Got to agree with the consensus. GGG has solid defence when he wants to, and only takes the bangs when he knows the opponent can't hurt him or is throwing flat footed. Easy night for him.

McClellan in the right hands and with the right attitude could have been one of the all time great middleweight/super middleweight fighters. If he had stayed with Manny Steward he would have been immense.

He had better one punch knockout power than Glolovkin, perhaps greater speed, but as an all round fighter I think GGG has the edge. McClellan was a great amateur however.

Regarding the question, GGG would hammer Benn. Too solid a boxer and would get to Benn mid to late rounds.

My dream mini tournament for prime Middle/Super middles of say the last 30 years would be (to be fought at 165 lbs)

Roy Jones v GGG
Calzaghe v Hagler
Ward v McClellan
Benn v Mugabi

I`m going for Hagler to win it.

Just going off track slightly GGG v Julian Jackson would have been great to watch- I'd go for GGG all day long but he couldn't adopt a walk through Jacksons punches kind of tactics to do it.

Agree Benn has no shot here.

Benn would have taken a fearful beatdown. GGG is too accurate and too hard hitting, and he wouldn't have left his chin hanging out for Benn to whack.

Golovkin is way more than a big puncher. He's a boxer through and through, he's not a KO merchant who loads up on shots, but rather a crisp heavy handed banger who grinds people down.

No way, McClellan had an absolutely cast iron chin - which tragically led to the terrible injuries - even one of the hardest punchers of all time, Julien Jackson, couldn't dent the G Man ( and boy did he give it a good go )

I'd give a fully trained G Man a very good shot v GGG - murderous puncher and rock like chin = nightmare.

Think Golovkin could have worn him down though, good as his chin is, GGG is smart enough to switch to the body if someone can't be hurt to the head. McClellan didn't have much defence, relied on his chin a lot, he'd have taken a lot of shots from GGG.

yes agree that's likely, though GGG has never had his chin REALLY tested by a huge puncher

Well he did face one, Lemiuex, who barely landed a glove on him, obviously GGG was better than Lemiuex, but not the most cultured of boxers - although he was an outstanding amateur, as a pro his style was basically to come out swinging with big shots from the first bell.

When Golovkin fights an opponent the calibre of Benn, we'll have a better idea.

Agreed, it's the economy of movement I really like, both in footwork and punching, very little is wasted.

This is true; however, we have seen Golovkin tagged by hard shots and he has barely blinked, which usually indicates a fighter with a very good chin indeed, he also doesn't allow himself to get hit anywhere near as much as Benn did even at his best. GGG's footwork and balance is so much better than Benn, he was always falling in with shots.
