Heavyweight Charles Martin was shot in the forearm earlier this week, and is laid up in the hospital.

A passenger in Martin's car told LAPD officers they were in downtown L.A. around 5 AM Tuesday when 2 men approached the vehicle and got into an argument with Martin.

According to the police report ... the men started shooting, but missed and fled. Martin then got in his car and chased the alleged shooters, but crashed into a utility pole.

Police say that's when the suspects returned and opened fire again. This time, Martin took a bullet to his forearm, and the suspects fled again, this time in a car.

Officers responded and transported Martin to the hospital.

Martin and he says the officers saved his life -- he was losing a lot of blood when they arrived at the scene. Martin says he doesn't know the suspects, and has no idea why they had beef with him.

One big difference in Martin's version of the story is he says he was trying to get away from the gunmen -- not chasing them -- when he crashed.

The former IBF heavyweight -- who lost the belt earlier this year -- adds he was worried the shooters were coming back to finish the job. He says he jumped in the bed of a parked pickup truck when he "looked down, and saw a pool of blood. I said to myself,
'I gotta get outta here. I'm gonna die. I'm gonna bleed to death.'"

"I have to pay respect to the cops. They saved my life."

Police haven't found the suspects.

Former world heavyweight champion Charles Martin - the man deposed by Anthony Joshua in June - has been shot in Los Angeles.

The 30-year-old from St Louis now resides in Carson, California but it was in downtown LA at approximately 5am that Martin was allegedly involved in an altercation with two men that resulted in gunfire.

Hope he gets well soon.

Why not, you should be able to go where you please, when you please, he's a grown man, downtown L.A isn't the shitehole it once was, it's quite trendy these days.

Course, he may have been hanging with some street people, who knows, but I'm not going to assume he was.

your right he should be able to do as he pleases, but for the sake of self preservation you need to use a bit of common sense and being a former heavyweight "champ" he automaticaly has a big target on his back so should be more careful about where and whom he hangs with IMO

Poor Charles Martin is having a run of bad luck.

Thanks for sharing this!! I hadnt heard about this. Glad to hear Martin appreciates the cops in an era when cop-hating thug groups like Black LIES Matter have been trying to place targets on the backs of cops.

Hopefully LAPD will catch these filthy thugs, who obviously dont know how to aim a gun since most of their shots missed. There are lots of security cameras in downtown LA that could help capture these punks. Here's a recent incident in LA ghetto where another thug couldnt shoot straight and got smoked by the cops he was shooting at:

Beg to differ on your assumption that he was "hanging with street people"...he was in his CAR when these thugs approached him.

Even though downtown LA has been largely renovated there are still some criminals & thugs hanging around because the "Skid Row" area is not far away, with lots of homeless, thugs and criminals around there.

Just because Martin is black and has dreadlocks doesnt make him a "gangsta"...he's a very disciplined athlete and standup guy.

That doesn't sound right... When more than one armed man is shooting at you -- and they miss... Do you chase them??? You'll wind up like Vernon Forrest.

Especially if you're so drunk you run flat into a utility pole trying to run down the people shooting at you... I don't think Martin is that dumb.

I'm just happy to hear he wasn't shot BY the police.

Odds are he wouldn't be shot by the police.
The behavior of some information gatherers to the public is desperate and will only spur certain people to do bad things, if you have a conscience tap into it immediately.

No, I was saying I wasn't going to assume anything, my point is that many people will leap top conclusions about black athletes being around the wrong people, it's just as likely he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Hope he makes a swift and full recovery.

Why do people assume he was up to no good because he was out and about at 0500? Perhaps he was driving to work or something.
