Tremendous fights, both.

And so are Jones' two with Kirkland Laing

One of the most frightening punchers I've ever seen, Colin Jones. The Dig, Left hand or right hand, the ex grave digger from Wales was one scary dude.

Yes, he the impact of the shots that dropped Laing were so sudden it initially seemed Jones had made him disappear.

I havent seen Jones before but i'll watch these through the week,my dad KO'd Colin's brother in the ams,im not sure what brother but im along his tonight so i'll ask him

My old man said it was Davie Jones who he fought

I remember years ago my dad telling me how he got stoned with Kirkland Laing in Nottingham in the 80's but i didnt know much more but he was telling me tonight how he was working there for about a month,found himself a local and he asked one of the regulars if there was a boxing gym near and he got pointed to what happened to be Laing's gym,who was retired and training fighters by then,anyway my dad had his coaching badges and Kirkland asked him to help out the gym which my dad ended up doing for the rest of his time down there

He said Kirkland was pretty dapper back then so it must have been before he lost everything,still my dad said he was mental but a sound guy

Another great fight that,i had it 116-112 McCrory but nothing wrong with a draw,i gave the last round to him but Jones landed some solid shots himself

I had McCrory sweeping the 1st 6 rounds,i thought he boxed beautifully,using the ring to its fullest,jabbing and moving whilst the bull like Jones came ploughing forwards looking to land that monster left hook,he really digs the heel in when throwing that shot,so much so that he almost goes 360 when he missed

Then Colin started to find his range as Milton visably tired,McCrory was still on his toes but he was running and pot shotting by then and Jones started landing some hurtful looking shots,i enjoyed that,i'll watch the rematch tomorrow

McCrory/Jones 2 was a cracker too,kind of similar to the 1st fight when McCrory starts off fast although this time he put Jones down in the 1st,Milton continues to pick up points as Colin's stalking him,then again about the midway point Jones starts to get his shots off and he had McCrory badly hurt in the 7th and the bell probably saved him,Jones hurt him a few times in this fight but McCrory managed to weather the storms and get the decision

Jones really went to town on Palm after he put him down the 1st time,great show of power punching

Close fight, but I think Jones was the better man and deserved the title.

Great timing from the commentator for the first knockdown in the Palm fight.

That's the great Reg Gutteridge commentating in Denmark. And the great ( he was in his hey day, as a commentator ) Jim Watt joined the dream team soon after.

Jones chilling punch put him near the Julien Jackson category; he never got started v Don Curry but I so wanted him to test the Americans chin that night - and we now know that if he had reached Don's chin, he'd have had a great chance at shocking upset.
I recall Ian Darke was doIng the BBC radio commentary that night.

Darke was an outstanding commentator also.

Jones vs McCrory

1. 9 - 10 McCrory with the slightly better work in the opener
2. 9 - 10 McCrory. Throwing punches in 3s and 4s, where as Jones is loading up and missing with single shots. McCrory landing far more scoring shots
3. 9 - 10 McCrory, boxing his head off at this point and Jones just walking after his man. You can see already how this fight might turn, Jones really loads up.
4. 9 - 10 McCrory, someone really needs to teach Jones lateral movement, McCrory is finding it too easy to pepper him with shots
5. 9 - 10 McCrory - looks levels above Jones. I suspect if Jones didn't have the power these 2 would not be in the same ring.
6. 9 - 10 McCrory again outboxing Jones. Jones finding him with a few as McCrory's reactions slow.
7. 9 - 10 McCrory. much closer, McCrory still landed more but Jones getting more clean shots off. McCrory looking weary, throwing arm punches
8. 10 - 10. The pace slowed and McCrory on his bike landing the jab and Jones closing down better and getting a bit more success with power shots
9. 10 - 9 Jones. I was actually scoring this to McCrory, who was pot shotting well till a late bombardment swung it for Jones
10. 10 - 9 Jones. Nothing left in McCrory's punches, Jones walking him down now and landing heavily. McCrory knows he's ahead and trying to survive
11. 9 - 10 - McCrory. Found a second wind, got back to combination punching and did enough in the first half to nick this, Jones landed a couple crackers in the last minute though.
12. 10 - 9 - Jones. Jones landed some crunching blows as McCrory tried to in fight and I suspect con the judges with some shoe shine flurries but threw nothing of siubstance.

112 - 117 McCrory

For me McCrory was a far better boxer, If Jones didn't have the power McCrory could have stood his ground more and thoroughly outboxed Jones.
As it was Jones did swing like a man trying to cut down a tree and McCrory had to work hard, keep constantly on the move and throw plenty, which emptied the tank and possibly damaged his hand.
Jones found some success late on but that was largely down to McCrory running out of steam and trying to survive, while being well ahead IMO.

As for Jones, had he been able to cut the ring of better or counter his man more effectively, he'd have had more success but I saw very little technically to impress me.
At the start of the 6th, McCrory threw something like a 10 punch combination. If Jones could slip and counter he'd have taken the initiative in this fight a lot sooner, equally had he used a little lateral movement to trap McCrory it might have been a different story.

Genuinely think there was levels between the 2 and Jones power and perseverance kept it competitive. I thought early on 1 big punch from Jones might be what would turn this fight but it wasn't.
