No way id actually go through the process, but what do you have to do to become an "approved" judge in pro game?

No doubt theres courses and levels that cost over the odds over a number of years and red tape hoo-ha. But does anyone know the actual process?

If I scored the fights at a small hall show this weekend id bet my arse for a pound my scoring would be as accurate as the judges round the ring. Seems to be those that can be arsed, have the money and are in the click that end up scoring fights.

9 times out if 10 its the referee that scores the small hall shows is it not? In that case you would have to be the man in the middle to judge the fight. Something I wouldnt mind doing myself actually.

You apply for a referee's licence from the BBB of C. If awarded you would initially go to shows and score the bouts from ringside to be compared to the official scores. After so long you would go to an interview where, if successful, you would be approved to start refereeing as a trainee ref. At this point all you are doing is supervising the bout whilst someone scores from outside (I think it can be anyone from B class up, but might need to be A class.). After so long you would be awarded your B class status and start scoring the bouts whilst refereeing. Once you get to A class you could be a judge for a British Title eliminator or Celtic/English title bouts. To be a judge for a British Title bout or above you would need to be an A Star ref.

Yeah im mates with his bro, used to train together until I changed jobs and gyms. Its something id fancy but spend 6 months a year out the country so difficult to follow up on it.

Nearly right; you write to your local area and they will invite you to an interview where they will ask you a number of questions. If successful you will become a trial referee where you go to shows and score ringside. They compare your scores with the referee in charge of the contest and keep records. This can can years depending on the area; the Welsh area have far less shows than the Southern area as an example. If your scoring is okay you get invited to "perambalate" the ring taking charge of lower level contests and there will be a qualified referee scoring ringside and it is his decision that decides the contest (you still score same as before but this time in the ring whilst controlling the bout). If you do well over a period of time you will be invited to the referee committee where all the A* will interview you asking you multiples of questions about the rules of boxing (you will be given the blue referee rules book to learn from the very start). After the questions they ask you to wait outside whilst they discuss your interview and answers and take a vote (as long as you answer this rules questions well they should vote yes). You then become a B class referee and can officiate contest up to 8 rounds; you can also judge contest as well - B class have judges 10 round area contests and eliminators. Some judge title fight - IBF WBC and the like continental bouts and silver championship (especially if it a busy weekend of big shows where the A* are doing British - European and World titles.

Very interesting post and read. Being a good referee doesn't always mean being a good judge though. So be good if they had people do judging without the reffing
