Be honest, the biggest upset you predicted

Post by Controversial »

No fibbing and if possible show a link to a post if you made the prediction. What was the biggest upset you predicted?

You'll have to take my word for it but I said Tyson will never ever beat Holyfield I argued many a time with my brother who was a Tyson fanatic. :maybe:

Mosley Margarito

I never saw how Mosley could lose that fight. Margarito doesn't fight like any of the guys who beat Mosley beforehand. People were saying Mosley was done after the Cotto fight but it wasn't like Cotto brutalized him. I thought that fight was close and Shane seemed to have a much better chin than Cotto.

Hopkins Pavlik

A recipe for disaster for Pavlik the entire time. Pavlik isn't as athletic nor moves as much as prime Jones or even Taylor who he beat. He's a stationary target relying on his one two. No way a guy like that was going to beat Hopkins of that time.

I remember asking a buddy of mine if he knew a bookie because I thought the Tyson-Douglas odds were absurd. If I was in NV or had known a bookie I would have put $50 or $100 on Douglas based on 1) the absurd odds 2) Greg Page knocking Tyson down in sparring and 3) the fact Douglas was big, motivated, and could box a little.

Yes, I'd be lying if I said I knew Douglas would win, but I remember thinking the odds should be more like 3-1 not 30-1.

Bramble-Mancini - saw Bramble take apart Bogner and knew that Mancini would be prefect for him - I did have a bet down, but not much unfortunately.

I predicted that Frampton would do Santa Cruz recently. Apparently some American betting companies had him down at 9/1 when the fight was first announced.

I got that one right also.
Plus Foreman over Frazier and Ali over Foreman.
I have no idea what the odds were for any of those contests though.

As a side note. In 1986 my best buddy looked me in the eye and said "Tim Witherspoon is not focused for his rematch with Bonecrusher Smith, he's going to get knocked out in the 1 st round".

I got Benn v McClellan right....putting aside wanting Benn to win as a fan, I remember reading the reports and watching most of the build-up and recognising that Benn was properly irritated, in-shape and very focussed and that McClellan seemed unaware of what Benn would be bringing and what a big fight in the UK was actually going to be like.

Can't recall what the betting was doing and whether Nige was a true outsider.... but I think he got a massive charge from being written-off in some quarters, was pissed with McClellan supposedly being here to 'collect' the belt, and was not in the mood to be bossed in front of his fans.

It'd probably have to be Glen Johnson beating Antonio Tarver in their first fight.

Neither of these are nearly as big, but I think they were mild upsets. Maidana over Broner and Cotto over Sergio Martinez were both pretty good.

I'm not the greatest at calling upsets, but I have my moments.

McCall - Lewis 1, but then again I picked Lewis to lose a lot of fights so not really a great foresight. I was bound to get it right eventually.
Also I picked Holmes to beat Mercer

How about the opposite - I bet the farm on Foreman against Ali - ouch! :brick: I thought it was easy money in the bank; it's been 42 years and I'm still pissed!

I picked this one too. I went that night, and saw one of the public sessions that Benn put on in the build up. He was so focussed, and annoyed as he felt they'd brought McClellan over to destroy him. Benn was a fair outsider, I can't remember the odds, but they did close up near the fight as a lot of late money seemed to come for Benn. I predicted he'd win, but honestly thought he was out in the first. I've still never seen anything like that comeback since, Benn just wouldn't be beaten.

Can I claim Marquez v Pacqiuao IV as an upset? Even though Manny was 2-1-1 against him, I always thought Marquez had his number. I was certain he would win this one.

I picked Hearns to beat Hill. I don't know how much of an upset it was but I seem to remember that Hill was quite heavily favored at the time. I figured Hearns could not be outboxed and Hill didn't have much power.

Definitely, Holyfield vs Tyson I in 1996. I was so confident in that fight that it gives me a great satisfaction when I see it on film.

I met Bramble sometime prior to that match; he told me what he was gonna do.
I also picked FOREMAN-YOUNG.
