It seems with the Ward-Kovalev fight hopefully coming up soon, there has been little attention paid to the one time recognized champion, Adonis Stevenson. I have just been reviewing his fights this evening, and he really is an exceptional talent with a wicked left hand. Looking at the victories over Dawson, Cloud, and Bellow, he certainly seemed an outstanding champion, demonstrating a remarkable ability to land the left hand to body and head.

Looking at his most recent fight against 'top dog' Williams, a 4 round action packed shoot out, a few things seem clear. First, Stevenson still has his outstanding power and signature punch. Second, at just shy of 39 years of age, Stevenson does look and move a little less athletically than he did before, taking some solid punches before coming through with the victory.

Is Stevenson in line for a shot at the winner of Ward-Kovalev, or are his network differences an insurmountable obstacle? Are there any interesting fights out there for him otherwise? Or does he merely regain his title up to the age of 40, and leave on top?

Adonis Stevenson? That's right, he's still around.

Kidding aside, I would hope that a fight between him and the SOGgy v Krusher winner could be made. More likely, he will fight two or three more under the radar prohibitive underdogs though, like Danny is appearing to be attempting to do (although I still think Danny is positioning for FMJ next May).

He should fight Beterbiev

Stevenson vs Alvarez would be a decent step up from what he has been fighting lately.

I'm not sure he wants any part of Kovalev.

I think while SK is tied up with Andre Ward, he should fight someone like Jean Pascal.

That's an easy sell: it would sell out any stadium or arena in Canada within minutes & Pascal would give him a good fight, although Jean might be on the slide a little bit.

Stevenson is much older, but he seems 'younger' in some ways.

Kathy Duva successfully lobbied the WBC to make Sergey Kovalev the mandatory challenger for their 175lb world title.

The WBC agreed to make Sergey Kovalev the mandatory challenger to Adonis Stevenson’s title, at a time when the Russian was a network free agent.

The WBC ordered purse bids for the bout, with Stevenson a willing participant (as funded by GYM and Al Haymon’s money).

Sergey Kovalev signed an exclusive contract with HBO and then withdrew from the WBC’s purse bid process and also renounced his mandatory challenger status.

The WBC then claimed that Sergey Kovalev was the reason for the bout falling through.

Kathy Duva has insisted that the Stevenson-Kovalev bout can only take place if it is televised by HBO, regardless as to whether more money would be involved if the bout was promoted by one of Haymon’s guys or televised by Showtime.

That's the reality of the sitution, as confirmed by Teams Kovalev and Stevenson... and also the WBC.

I absolutely despise Adonis in every way but I do admit that he's a fantastic talent. I think that Adonis give Kovalev a heck of a fight if they fought a couple years back when Adonis was with HBO. To negotiate the fight and then sign on with Showtime late in negotiations was a clear move made to duck Kovalev. If he had taken that fight and even loss to Kovalev, his stock would be much higher than it presently is.

Top Dog Williams tapped out of that fight with Adonis. He was competitive in stretches but he clearly wanted out of that fight and to take the money and run. Williams is the same guy that clearly quit on his stool in a previous fight so it's not a stretch to say that he lacks heart.

At some point soon, Adonis will have to take a PPV fight against Ward or Kovalev. He doesn't have many more fights left. Unless, of course, he decides to not test himself and retire with the belt and lineal championship which is most likely the way it will go. Sad.

Not really convinced. Stevenson is a good champion but I'm not convinced he's better than Kovalev or Ward. Strikes me as a homer. The Boone loss does not look good on his resume. Wasn't even supposed to be a remotely competitive fight yet Stevenson looked pretty bad and it's not like he lost on a freak punch either. Boone stunned him a few times in the first before nailing him in the second.

Adonis will be fighting Joe Smith if Smith beats Pascal. Otherwise think we get Adonis vs Alvarez next.
