Lampley Tough on PBC on Recent Episode of The Fight Game

I'm a huge fan of HBO Boxing and Jim Lampley but I found his recent soapbox performance at the end of the most recent episode of The Fight Game to be pathetic. If you haven't seen it, I'll recap in short. Lampley basically gloats over the failures of the PBC in a "I told you so" manner that was more self serving to himself and HBO's future gains than the future of boxing. He pointed to how PBC failed to make the matches fans want to see and the commercials in between rounds robbed the audience of the real drama in boxing which mostly exists while boxers are sitting in the corners. He caps off the segment by showing excitement about the prospects of the 200 plus PBC boxers that will become free agents shortly as a result of the failed enterprise and that maybe we can see Adonis/Kovalev after all.
Lampley has openly complained about the cold war in boxing between promoters and networks keeping us from seeing the fights fans want to see. And his recent comments do nothing more than make the walls higher and thicker. Harmon's still going to be "managing" most of these boxers so how do comments like this bridge the gap? Kicking Haymon while he's down isn't helping matters. I find it funny that Lampley criticizes someone for overspending on the sport when HBO just had a year of cuts across the board on their Boxing product.
PBC may be gone for good now but my feeling is that the cold war will persist and keep us from seeing the best fight the best. It's these types of commentaries that do nothing to mend the fences. But what do you think? Will this be good, bad or mean absolutely nothing to boxing in 2017?

More PBC fights are scheduled for next month. The PBC is still around.

They have nothing scheduled at the moment and that's with fights like Charlo/Williams, Stevenson/Alvarez, etc...ordered/agreed too.

lol, HBO is pathetic trying to pump up the garbage they've shown this year. And if PBC's guys do become free agents, HBO doesn't have the money to put on the fights anyhow. Great pyrrhic victory.

I like Jimmy Lamps even though he gets a lot of hate, but I'd be happy to see all the 24/7 and Fight Game episodes go away forever if it meant even 1 more fight on HBO each year. I usually miss The Fight Game, and I don't give a sh*t that I missed it.

Who's he facing the dreaded TBD or have they already excavated the lucky stiff? I'm really just hoping for a step above shot for years now Guerrero

No idea, but the rumour mill is suggesting that John Molina Jr. or Andre Berto are the most likely names in the frame for this fight. I doubt the actual opponent will be as good as either of those guys.

Ah kk thank you. Yeah both of those fights are underwhelming to say the least. Anyone below their level is a waste of time. Swift needs a top opponent and to look sharp, might erase the doubts that Herrera and Peterson created.
I think DG is waiting on the potential Mayweather sweepstakes. That's gotta cross his mind.

Doesn't make much sense that a guy who never shied away from a challenge all of a sudden wants protection. It's the hideous business model of the pbc.

This is exactly what's wrong with not just PBC but the sport.
Thurmon and Garcia should just fight next.

All of the costs for the fights covered by the PBC are funded out of their own budget. The PBC actually have to buy air time from the TV networks in order for them to televise their fights. None of the PBC branded fights are funded by PPV events or the fight fans.
Therefore, if the TV networks and the fight fans aren’t making any financial contribution towards the costs of the PBC’s fights, what right do we have to complain about them refraining from funding incredibly expensive super-fights, such as Thurman-Garcia?
In my mind, I suspect the reason why some of their biggest bouts are being held back, is because they’re waiting for one of the TV networks to strike a deal with the PBC to pay some sort of license fee to have exclusive rights to televise their fight cards.
So it makes sense for the PBC to refrain from devaluing their most prized-assets until they have established payments to be received by one or more TV networks.

Here’s an article about the PBC that has recently been published on The Ring website… and it seems that they have been informed of the very same rumours that I posted on this forum more than a week ago:
"Is PBC burning out or, actually, poised to burn brighter?
"If I had to guess – and that’s all I can do – not being privy to the Haymon sanctum, I’d say 2017 is setting up to be a period of growth for PBC. Honestly, however, the last couple months have been rather stagnant.
"But we’re now hearing that a new rights deal is in the works and then this down period makes sense.
"My informed guess is that PBC will be around for the foreseeable future, to kick around and/or provide thrills and chills outside the pay cable/PPV realm... PBC can elevate itself by banding together with rivals instead of ignoring or steamrolling them... the “rumors of demise” line about PBC and labeled them as greatly exaggerated."

That's a good reply actually.
But the other big issue is their fighters purses have massively been inflated for fighting poor opposition. A good example I can think of is Robert Guerrero who got paid over $1,000,0000 each time to fight a taxi driver and Aron Martinez ( who I don't think was a full time fighter either). Danny Garcia has propbably been on serious money and he hasn't had a hard fight for years now.
If a fighters is getting paid X amount to fight a really easy fight then they will expect more than X to fight a proper fight the fans want to see.
Look at Gary Russell now he just doesn't want to fight because he won't be paid as much as he was getting.
Danny Jacobs lawyers are going to the WBA to increase their purse bid split from 25% for GGG because he will have been massively overpaid for poor opposition ( except Quillin)

I know that the two major networks pulled the airtime away from the PBC for Nov and Dec. The DSG fight was supposed to air on prime time but it was pulled and from your research shows the found a place on Spike to air the fight. Either way that you look at it, it spells problems for the PBC. When major networks pull back airtime that they've agreed to ahead of time, it means the idea and product is not going to make it. I hardly think that the ratings from DSGs fight against Algeria or some other bum on Spike will make NBC rethink their position.
CEO's will not admit failure of a company until its sunk for good so I put zero stock into what PBC officials are saying.

I'm thinking Danny Garcia vs Kermit The Frog would draw more interest

I'd rather watch Paul Williams in a wheelchair. Amazing how many nuthuggers a manager has. How can anyone defend this garbage? I was all about the idea and defended the premise if getting the public acquainted with the names. No continuity, just overpaid shit fights with a handful of exceptions.

Here’s a list of scheduled PBC/Haymon bouts:
• Date = 12/11/16; Network = Spike; Garcia vs. Vargas; Title = Non-title bout
• Date = 10/12/16; Network = Showtime; Mares vs. Cuellar; Title = WBA World featherweight title
• Date = 10/12/16; Network = Showtime; Williams vs. Charlo; Title = IBF World super welterweight title
• Date = 14/01/17; Network = Showtime; DeGale vs. Jack; Title = TBC
• Date = 28/01/17; Network = Showtime; Frampton vs. Santa Cruz; Title = WBA Super World featherweight title
• Date = 28/01/17; Network = Showtime; Garcia vs. Zlaticanin; Title = WBC World lightweight title
• Date = 11/02/17; Network = Showtime; Broner vs. Granados; Title = TBC
• Date = 04/03/17; Network = Showtime; Thurman vs. Garcia; Title = WBA Super & WBC welterweight titles
Not bad for a company that’s supposed to be out of business.

Good stuff, but where did all the freeeeee fights go? If his guys are pretty much just filling Showtime cards now aren't we back to the way things were prior to PBC?

The PBC/Haymon have always had some of their fights televised by Showtime. And as far as I’m aware, none of these bouts are on PPV.
The only reason why I’ve listed the Showtime cards, is because they’ve only just announced their schedule.
It is my belief that other networks will follow suit in the short-term, by announcing their own schedule when they’re ready to do so.
Dan Rafael has already confirmed for definite that the PBC will be back on ESPN in April 2017.

You can see they've almost entirely shifted to Showtime, because Showtime will actually pay them good money for good cards, whereas the cards they put on channels like Spike are generally big losers for them.
Garcia/Vargas is abject garbage, although it's the sort of garbage that other promoters are guilty of as well.
It seems like we're going to end up right back where we were a couple of years ago, with Haymon fighters appearing nearly exclusively on Showtime.
