Tyson Fury has officially vacated his WBA, WBO, IBO world titles!

Tyson Fury has this evening announced that he has voluntarily vacated his WBO, WBA and IBO World Heavyweight titles with immediate effect to fully focus on his medical treatment and recovery.

“I feel that it is only fair and right and for the good of boxing to keep the titles active and allow the other contenders to fight for the vacant belts that I proudly won and held as the undefeated heavyweight champion of the world when I defeated the long-standing champion Wladimir Klitschko,” said Tyson.

“I won the titles in the ring and I believe that they should be lost in the ring, but I’m unable to defend at this time and I have taken the hard and emotional decision to now officially vacate my treasured World titles and wish the next in-line contenders all the very best as I now enter another big challenge in my life which I know, like against Klitschko, I will
conquer.”

Peter Fury, Tyson’s uncle and trainer, said, “Tyson will be back stronger from this and I will make sure, no matter what we have to deal with, Tyson not only comes back but will reclaim what’s rightfully his. I’m very proud of my nephew’s achievements.”

It's sad that the heavyweight title that was initially partially unified almost nine years ago has now been decimated and it’s going to be an era (at least for the short-term) where there’ll be multiple “world champions” of Charles Martin’s ilk that will be wearing straps that were once possessed by much greater fighters.

I’ve always been a fan of Tyson Fury’s underrated fighting ability and his charismatic, yet controversial, persona. However, I’m unsure if I can ever get behind a man that has had such a detrimental effect on the status of the sport as a whole.

I fear we may enter a new “dark age” era, such as the early to mid-eighties, where the heavyweight division “enjoyed” such “lengthy” and “legendary” world title reigns of the likes of: Pinklon Thomas, Tim Witherspoon, Trevor Berbick, Mike Weaver, Michael Dokes, Gerrie Coetzee, Greg Page, Tony Tubbs, Tony 'TNT' Tucker and James 'Bonecrusher' Smith.

It will be interesting, if nothing else.

Seems almost inevitable Joshua and Parker will win titles somewhere along the line. The question then will be how long it is until they are matched up.

So Fury winning the belts supposedly made the division exciting, and now those belts being taken away is really what's going to make it exciting?

I guess it looks better to vacate rather than being stripped. Good news.

Fury winning the titles did make the division exciting again - at the time. But nobody foresaw at the time that he won them that he would be relinquishing them like he has.

I disagree. Prying these belts away from Fury is the best thing that has happened to the heavyweight division since Lennox held em. Fury was never going to defend these belts regularly with the circus he brings to the sport. Now a guy like Joshua can start his time and his reign and make people believe in boxing again in the heavyweight division. 2017 Wilder vs. Joshua could end up being the biggest fight within the division in a decade. Great for boxing.

We all know people like that.
I commend Fury for vacating.
I wish he was healthy and fighting regularly.
Considering he isn't, this sure beats more delays and cancellations.

A title reign as meaningless and pathetic as the fight that spawned it. Tyson Fury may be the worst Heavyweight Champion of all time.

Yes. At least those guys made title defenses and didn't just become a whiny little p*ssy and throw their career away after having their titles handed to 'em.

The Ring magazine title is also vacant now.
The question I have is:
What about the "Lineal World Heavyweight Championship Title?"
It says the man who beats the man and Fury didn't lose his title in the ring.
Does he remain the Lineal champion?
Is he retired?
Is the "Lineal World Heavyweight Championship Title" also vacant?

Seems a bit unfair that nobody can challenge for the lineal championship until he comes back if/when that ever happens. As far as I'm concerned Fury lost the lineal championship along with the belts. He can challenge for both when he comes back.

A good move as he wasn't fighting anyone. Now all that is needed is to force Wilder to fight Povetkin or a top 5 ranked opponent, and heavyweight boxing will be back in business.

Fury has admitted to using drugs but didn't; say exactly when. If they were illegal, perhaps his win over Wlad should be ruled a NC?

With respect to the vacant WBO title - there are renewed doubts Parker vs Ruiz will be sanctioned to fight for it.

WBO president Francisco "Paco" Valcarcel has told ESPN boxing writer Dan Rafael that the organisation may set up a 4 man box-off for the vacant title involving the 4 leading available contenders.

That would have fights involving No 1 Parker (21-0, 18 KOs), No 2 Klitschko (64-4, 54 KOs), No 3 Ruiz (29-0, 19 KOs) and No 4 David Haye (28-2, 26 KOs).

The WBO are expected to discuss the scenario at their annual conference in Puerto Rico next week.

Wow - David Haye being thrown into the mix! Can't believe his name is even being mentioned after his last two come back fights...

With all of Tyson Fury's problems, who knows, maybe in a year or 2 he will stage a tremendous comeback.

In the mid 1970s George Foreman and Bob Dylan incidentally (there's an off-topic thread on him) were both written off as yesterday's news.

Yes, Fury-Wlad was like watching paint dry.
Yes Fury has said stupid, even offensive things.
Yes, Fury could be dead within a year.

But Yes, there is still hope for a comeback.
