Tyson Fury has officially vacates his WBA, WBO, IBO world titles!

Tyson Fury has this evening announced that he has voluntarily vacated his WBO, WBA and IBO World Heavyweight titles with immediate effect to fully focus on his medical treatment and recovery.

“I feel that it is only fair and right and for the good of boxing to keep the titles active and allow the other contenders to fight for the vacant belts that I proudly won and held as the undefeated heavyweight champion of the world when I defeated the long-standing champion Wladimir Klitschko,” said Tyson.

“I won the titles in the ring and I believe that they should be lost in the ring, but I’m unable to defend at this time and I have taken the hard and emotional decision to now officially vacate my treasured World titles and wish the next in-line contenders all the very best as I now enter another big challenge in my life which I know, like against Klitschko, I will
conquer.”

Peter Fury, Tyson’s uncle and trainer, said, “Tyson will be back stronger from this and I will make sure, no matter what we have to deal with, Tyson not only comes back but will reclaim what’s rightfully his. I’m very proud of my nephew’s achievements.”

Now all these fights can finally get made

I'm not sure but from other peoples posts it seems likely these two belts are going to split?

Most of the noise seems to be suggesting that outcome. I doubt there will be much more delay in the announcements now the titles are freed up.

Hearn's plan was originally for Joshua to fight someone late this year and then Parker for the mandatory defence early next year.

With all the mention of Wlad and date delays it appears Parker's management have been forced to get a Plan B in place.

Parker's Plan B is starting to look just as attractive as waiting for Joshua, because if Parker can win the WBO title he could then fight Joshua in a unification fight and get a better portion of the loot as well.

Its an honorable move to step aside and let others fight for the titles when he is not able to defend them. He deserves credit for this. I hope sanctioning bodies do the honorable thing as well and make him champ in recess so that he can fight for the titles at once when he is ready. Although he wont really need it. I am sure champions will be lining up to fight him when he is back. Except Dion Chickenson of course.

For me, it seems more like Parker's management have decided to go down the Ruiz route as he's got a far better chance winning a world title against him than he has Joshua. Makes sense really.

Edit: Although in fairness, it does make more financial sense to do it this way and then have a bigger cut of the Joshua purse.

With his popularity in New Zealand, milking that title in New Zealand is a huge option. He wouldn't be the first.
I'd be surprised if he didn't have a soft first defence down there.

I'm guessing that Joshua-Klitschko could be for the IBF and WBA 'Super Heavyweight' title.
Browne v Oquendo could be for the WBA 'Regular' title.
Parker v Ruiz could be for the WBO title.
Not sure who the IBO belt would go to - probably the Klitschko-Joshua winner.
Fury will remain the Linear champion because he hasn't retired.

Its a mess , but i still really cannot see Hearns wanting a bar of Vlad just yet , a loss sets him back and its more than likely

Fury wasn't up to the responsibility or the pressure or the discipline of it anyway.

Even if he had the size and mobility to neutralise Wlad.

I would suggest that the winner of Klitchsko vs Joshua is as pretty much "universally" recognised as the world champion as it was for much on Fury's reign. If we are being "pedantic" of title baubles and belt then surely Wilder had to be recognised as world champion for much of Fury's reign.

I think we have got to classify Fury as a fighter in "recess" and until he is he comes out of his "recess" then Joshua vs Klitchsko should be the recognised champion. If you didn't recognise Wilder as a champion when he won the WBC belt, why recognise him now? It seems like Klitchsko and Joshua will duke it out for the "top" WBA belt and not the "ordinary" or "interim" versions, it will only be the WBO that will be different and in reality from Fury's reign and really I think classing Parker or Ruiz as world champions is a bit like classing John Ruiz as a world champion in the Lewis era.

That is off course assuming Klitchsko and Joshua do sign up. If Joshua continues to fight his current line of opponent then yes, about 3 or 4 fighters might have a case for being the world champion.

Load of balls ,Fury was considered the no1 linear champion, the man that beat the main man that had reined with 90% of the belts for 11 years , regardless of who gets given his belts , un till he's return he should be regarded as the main champion in recess !

Excatly the point you made - but what happens if he does not come out of his recess - do we just say there is no heavyweight champion? In that case - Rocky Marciano is the heavyweight champion.

In fact - if we want to be pedantic - Vitali Klitchsko is still recognised as the champion in recess with the WBC and many thought Wlad needed to beat him to be called the Linear and truly recognised Heavyweight champion in the first place. It could be argued with some conviction that Wlad didn't "beat the man who beat the man etc" but only got recognised as champion when his brother packed it in- shall we still be waiting for Vitali to comeback as he officially in the WBC books as a champion in recess. Wlad didn't exactly reign with 90% of the belts for 11 years - he reigned with 90% of the belts for 4 years, but the biggest threat to him was always the WBC champion for about 9 of his 11 year reign as a champion.

Klitchsko vs Joshua will be the recognised Heavyweight champion until Fury comesback and then they must fight Fury for the true championship.... if Fury doesn't comeback, Klitchsko/Joshua winner is the recognised as the champion.

If they get split, I wouldnt be surprised to see Vitali come out to play!

You can remain the best in most people's eyes (Louis during the war; Ali during Vietnam; Tyson in jail), but the championship's an actively contested title.
