Argument between me and mates about Naseem Hamed vs McGuigan

They say that McGuigan would win. Based on him being better than Ingle and McCullough who both did OK although they were beaten soundly. I reckon prime Naz beats Barry fairly handily. Probably makes him gunshy for a 12 round decision.
Opinions?

I don't see it as an easy fight for Naz, but I would lean towards him in that match. Remember McGuigan had a short peak but when he was at his best, he was a nightmare to fight.

Jim McDonnell, Steve Cruz and Peter Eubank all proved too good for Finbar.

You've been posting on Boxrec for 8 years and
that's the level of your understanding of boxing? Brush over a class world champion's accomplishments and judge him on a novice loss, a loss when he was past it, and a 15 round fight in 110 degrees. Who let you out of Current Scene!?

McGuigan's peak was a little before my time, but from what I've seen I think Hamed would have beaten him.

McGuigan was a better fighter than anyone Naz beat, and beat two fighters better than anyone Naz beat, in my opinion.

But Hamed would have easily beaten all in the same conditions.
Also Pedroza was well past it, and the quality American, whose name escapes me, boxed his head off before inexplicitly quitting. McGuigan didn't have any longitude at top world level, whereas Hamed unified the division and beat the best out there. He only took on Barrera when he was over the hill himself. He has near unbeatable when he was first champ.
For me Hamed wins very convincingly.

Bernie Taylor, strange fight that was. McGuigan couldn't do anything for the first five rounds, the the fight completely changed

When did Hamed go over the hill? When Barrera started punching his face?
I picked Barrera going in, and it wasn't because there was any evidence of the 27 year old Hamed being "over the hill". Your logic seems to be when he was a WBO champ boxing handpicked WBO opponents at home he looked fantastic therefore was in his prime, when he was in Vegas in a big fight vs an all-round beast and found himself outgunned he was suddenly over the hill.
Perhaps Barrera was just much better than everybody Hamed had ever faced - that two-fisted reality check he gave the Prince ran him right out of boxing.

Barry wins for me - he was a pressure fighter with a high output I think he would have kept walking nas down and outpointed him.

Ha, I expected a little more frothing and gnashing there, jim. I felt somewhat like frothing and gnashing myself, really think Barry is being badly undersold here. But never mind.

That would have been one hell of a fight, I would have liked Barry to win, but I think Naz in his absolute dedicated prime wins.

McGuigan 32 wins, 28 KOs, didn't realise he was that much of a banger to be fair

Take away national bias and Naz would be the popular pick. Mainly because he was better.
Against MAB I picked Barrera, Naz had laboured in some previous fights, had switched trainers and was blowing up between fights. Didn't take a master detective to realise he might not be taking the sport as serious as he could have been and there were issues inside his camp.
It's a shame because he was possibly good enough to beat Barrera, Morales and Marquez back in the day. What could have been eh? Imagine the legacy that would have left.

Lots of things went against Naz in the MAB fight..... his camp was shocking he came to camp well overweight and didn't have the time to get it off. He had idiots around him all yes men apart from Stewart who when watching the documentary wanted to follow a runner he knew the result already. Naz was past his prime simple as he had looked a shadow of his self before hand he was getting hit more and was toour reliable on his power. He looked in too minds when he was fighting after he left the Ingle's ..... Shame really

Wonder how many of these people who picked Barrera actually picked Barrera? Naz was 2/5 top price on the night and I have email conversations with Mike Katz and other boxing sages at the time who all thought Naz would do a job on him. Boxing News also picked Hamed.
I lost a fortune backing Hamed that night. Money I couldn't afford to lose. But if the conversation comes up now every man and his dog had Barrera winning. I guess after the ship has sunk, everyone knows how she might have been saved.
Hamed beats Barry Mac inside six rounds I reckon.

I don't remember anyone picking Barrera at all. If people were, they were very few. Barrera had been in wars with Morales and starched by a puncher in Junior Jones. Beautiful right hand by Jones in one of those KO's. I can't remember the other one but chances are it was a counter right. That was one of the best counter right hands in the game.Jones almost done Ingle with it even when he was shot and over the hill. Barerra wasn't being picked by many at all. I remember being shocked that Naz lost the fight. Conventional wisdom was a Naz KO.
I wonder if those threads are still around? I think at that time the seconds out message board was the only board going if I recall. Then rumour was that wazza had it shut down

Iv never seen a mcguigan fight only highlights and he was a vicious body puncher,my old trainer said about ten years ago that barry would of smashed naz prime for prime, ppl forget naz fought over the hill fighters most his career, boom boom, kevin kelly, even fighters we never heard of,manuel madina gave naz nightmares so did ingle in parts of his fight, cesar soto was an average fighter but the best naz could do was body slam him. Naz is and always has been a cock,a great entertainer but talked so much shit

Naz too fast for the predictable style of Mcguigan. Barry was a decent fighter but not in the class off Naz. Mid round stoppage for me.

Naz started relying on his power and should never have left Brendan posts in 5..... 4..... 3....... 2......
Is this match up over 12 or 15 rounds? I could see bazza getting to him ingle style over 15

These points are all well known but people choose to run Naz down on his only loss and then make excuses for Finbar's defeats to Jim McDonnell, Steve Cruz and Peter Eubank.
