Can someone put me straight on this,i thought it was only the IBF that enforce the standing 8 count so why,in a WBC fight did they give gavin a standing 8?

Thought that was strange last night. Thought he would of had to take a knee or get dropped for the refs intervention.

Gavin was being given some leeway. It was terrible officiating and very biased to Gavin but that's normal in the UK. Didn't hear the commentators saying much about it, obviously.

Agree, he was in a really bad place in the fight, so the ref bought him some time. That's all I read from it.

Terrible from the ref i thought,and on the rematch gavin wants,if it was the other way round would he give eggington a rematch if he was missed the weight,got dropped twice and finished in the 8th? I very much doubt it. It was a good fight though,better than i expected

if the ropes prevent you from taking a knee or going over, then the ref may administer a count. its not a standing 8 count as in the refs opinion the fighter would have touched down bar for the ropes/cornerpost.

This, he appeared to be sitting on the bottom rope.

Yes but he was against the ropes curling up they didnt prevent him from going down. I just thought that was wrong by the ref

This. There was a time during that exchange on the ropes, that they stopped Gavin from going down. The standing 8 was correct.

As far as im aware they are the only organisation that enforce a standing 8 the rest dont

No, IBF rules dont allow standing count. It only allows KD due to ropes if a fighter is "hanging helplessly over the ropes". Which obviously was not a case in this fight.

Eddie won't have been too fussed who won but probably has more scope with Eggington.

Personally I like the standing 8 count rule. The amateurs is a joke. I was stopped in Ayrshire in a fight I was winning just because my head snapped back after a punch!

BBBofC has standing 8 in their rules

Imo it shouldn't have been a count I didn't think the ropes stopped him from going down or held him up. Ref looked hesitant through the fight but understand why.

In British rings and all World bodies have a "mandatory eight count" when a knockdown occurs.
As far as I am aware the only country that has a standing eight in professional boxing is Argentina.
If a boxer is "supported" by the ropes and effectively would have touched down had they not been there then a count should be commenced.

Nope; the count can be administered only if the referee believes that the fighter was being held up by the ropes.

For heaven's sake - there is no standing eight count in British boxing. You only get a count if you are down, and down includes the ropes keeping you up. If you get up before eight, the referee counts to eight, but that doesn't make it a standing eight. And all this is on the BBBofC site. Very disappointing to see a Boxrec mod come out with something that is wholly wrong - mods do great work on this site and I am a big fan of Boxrec, so seeing that is majorly unimpressive.

To be fair in both instances it looked like he was sat on one of the lower ropes to keep himself up

I'm not commenting on the fight. I'm commenting on people saying there's a standing 8 count in British boxing when there plainly is not. ffs.

Ffs it was a version of the wbc title so should be wbc rules not british boxing rules,shouldnt be a standing 8 in any pro boxing fight these are professionals not amateur
