Where's it happening? It was supposed to Auckland then the government said they wouldn't fund it. It was then going to be in the states, then Arum said it was gonna be New Zealand again and then yesterday I think it was; Lonergan said that the main sponsor had just dropped out so it was looking like the states again.

Weird that it seems to be struggling to find a venue/sponsor Lefty.....there have been far worse WBO heavyweight title fights and I thought that Parker and Ruiz were quite well-supported and the fight would fill a decent venue with paying punters and getting a broadcaster behind it.

I think the issue is that whilst Parker is popular in New Zealand; the country doesn't have biggest population generally and then the actual number of people that have an interest in boxing there is probably relatively miniscule. There just doesn't seem to be much of a market there, period.

Cheers Lefty....yup, guess it is case of pure economics and market-size and scale.
Plus New Zealand time not being great for broadcasters?

Maybe the All Blacks getting a right good slapping from the Irish weekend will get the Kiwis behind Joe Parker and boxing

Haha. If Parker continues to have success I imagine boxings popularity in New Zealand will continue to grow. It will probably always be somewhat small time though; again due to the size of the population.

They cancelled a press conference for it on Saturday.

The fight will happen but probably not until early next year.

I know rugby is king in the Polynesian and surrounding Islands, but eff me, the potential to produce heavyweight boxers, just based on the frames and physical specimens produced in that part of the world should be pretty high! Always thought it was a bit of an untapped market

Andy Ruiz has lost more than 20 kg whilst training with Sanchez at altitude in California.

Ruiz is expecting to weight at about 111 kg. Having previously fought at more than 140 kg.

Wasn't his main sponsor Burger King?

They put a shedload of money into his New Zealand shows.

I picked Parker by KO because A out of shape Ruiz is easy to hit and I've never seen him in shape to judge.

Good observation mate :TU:

Can't help wondering what Jonah Lomu would have been like if he had been steered towards the ring as a teenager rather than rugby, especially with all that speed, explosivity and size he had in almost freakish spades....or the wrecking machine that was Va'aiga Tuigamala.

Maybe a NZ heavyweight programme sponsored by a local millionaire sports-fan is in order?

There has been a lot of speculation about Ruiz's weight and how much Sanchaz has trimmed him down. This is the most recent picture I could find of Ruiz :

Image

Only taken in the past 24 hours I think - since having arrived in NZ.

Joseph Parker's thoughts pre-fight :

"The way this opportunity has evolved, to have the fight in New Zealand, it just adds to that feeling that this is something that's meant to happen."

"I stood in the middle of Vector Arena the other day and I looked around, I absorbed the space and the volume of the place. I imagined it with 10,000 fans packed in. It's going to be amazing. Having the support of everyone there is going to lift me and give me an extra boost.

"I'm ready to fulfill my destiny. I'm ready to fulfill my grandfather's prophecy."

What I find odd is that Ruiz is 3-1 to beat Parker (seems accurate) but was priced at bookies 4-1 to beat Hughie Fury??!!

Both as the away fighter

That's more based on who the bookies think the punters will bet on. England in the football regularly have among the shortest odds to win tournaments despite never actually being among the favorites.

Oddly enough I was going to back Ruiz Jr to beat Hughie and I might stick a little bit on him to beat Parker. Despite being fat he has a lot about him when I'v watched him box.
