Michael Conlan, AIBA Dispute Continues To Roll Forward

Michael Conlan has continued his dispute with amateur boxing's world governing body after it emerged the AIBA has requested he be sanctioned over his post-fight outburst at the Rio Olympics.

Despite Conlan's decision to turn professional, the AIBA have seen fit to open disciplinary procedures against him over that incident. But Conlan, who begins his pro career on St Patrick's Day, has refused to back down, issuing a letter through his solicitor in which he strongly defends his position.

The statement reads:

"My client (Conlan) totally refutes accusations by the AIBA that he has undermined ‘the principles of honesty, integrity and sportsmanship'."

The letter also insists that Conlan will not be co-operating with any investigation, particularly given the enquiry into judging at the Rio Games has yet to deliver its findings.

"My client made a passionate critique of amateur boxing authorities in the immediate aftermath of that bout which attracted worldwide attention.

"His actions led to the suspension of a number of Olympic boxing judges and to a review of the Refereeing and Judging procedures governing the sport. My client was therefore to the fore in a concerted, high profile campaign to reform amateur boxing.

"My client is dismayed that a three member AIBA Disciplinary Commission Panel has been convened in relation to this matter, and in particular, in advance of any conclusion of the investigation into the thirty six judges used in the Olympics Games.

"I have informed the AIBA Disciplinary Commission Panel that my client will not be cooperating with their investigation in these circumstances."

The AIBA are a joke and some decisions were disgraceful but that particular decision wasn't close to being a robbery. People seem to forget, or refuse to see, how close that fight was. Could have gone either way. It was the easy way out to start screaming robbery and chucking the toys out the pram

While not an out and out robbery in boxing terms, there's no way the Russian won the fight based on the 3 rounds.

I just watched the fight and it was a close fight the first could of gone either way with conlon throwing lots but he kept getting caught with hooks at the end of the exchanges conlon won the second and lost the 3rd ,colon threw a lot but most were blocked and kept getting caught with big hooks .could of gone either way but not the robbery it was made out to be

crusader wrote:Conlan should've won, but he did keep getting caught with hooks between his flurries and I thought he was rocked a bit at one point. Levitt did a much better job on his Russian and that was by far the robbery of the tournament.

The little, chubby Turk who KO'd him last year had the right idea...will be interesting to see how that chin holds up in the pros.
