I keep hearing haye say he was unified cruiserweight champion but I don't ever remember him winning the ibf belt?? I am obviously missing part of the puzzle so could anyone clear this up for me??

He didn't but he was the recognised number one.

He unified multiple titles, but didn't fully unify the 4 titles

He was never undisputed in the sense of holding all four major titles, and he only defended his CW titles (just the WBA and WBC) in one fight.

People kept saying klitschko was the unified champ don't remember him holding the WBC either to be unified you only need two belts really but to be undisputed you should have them all unless your generally recognised as the number one in which case people will call you it anyway

In their first fight ( which apparently was absolutely class) Jean Marc Mormeck then WBA and WBC champion fought IBF champ Oneill Bell and lost meaning Bell had all three belts. The lineal/ring belt was on the line too.

They had an immediate rematch ( probably in the contract) however the IBF stripped Bell for not defending against the mandatory ( Steve Cunningham). The IBF have a habit of breaking titles up ( Jermain Taylor after he beat Hopkins Tyson Fury after he beat Wlad) Cunningham picked up the vacant belt.

Mormeck won the rematch and got the WBA and WBC back. Then his mandatory was David Haye who beat him getting the two belts and the lineal belt. Enzo Mac was hanging about as WBO champ and Haye was going to move up because he had to lose ridiculous weight but Warren was constantly slating Haye for ducking Enzo. Haye took the fight and smashed him.

Sure Cunningham eventually became a legit world level cruiser weight but Haye didn't have to beat him to prove he was number one.

Also it was very shortly after the Monty Barret fight he signed to fight Wlad as well but pulled out with injury ( though reality it was down to Setanta collapsing )

The way politics is its near difficult to be undisputed champ in the modern era. All the Alphabets ruin the sport.

Also just because you have a belt now doesn't mean you are legit. Charles Martin, Liam Smith, stuart Hall are faar from world class. ( I'm probably missing some as well)

Cunningham eventually became world level? He already had wins over Huck, Wlod, and Guillermo Jones. What did people like Enzo and Fragomeni have?

And Valuev became WBA champ a second time because Chagaev, the first to beat him, was stripped without losing his belt in the ring.

This sums it up perfectly. Haye was as close to undisputed as you can get these days.

I've noticed a trend of calling partially unified champs undisputed, I suppose it just sounds better to the masses

In a man who beat the man way Haye was The Champ. Although he held 3 of the 4 belts.
