It was just over 42 years ago when promoter extraordinaire Don King’s vision of having the great Muhammad Ali try and regain his crown from an unbeaten George Foreman in the African jungle became reality. And it was 15 years ago this year when Hasim Rahman shocked Lennox Lewis in South Africa. Now, promoter Eddie Hearn says it is possible that IBF heavyweight champ Anthony Joshua could follow in the footsteps of Foreman and Lewis and defend his title in Africa.
Hearn, in speaking with The Star, says there is interest from Nigeria – where A.J’s parents are from – to host a huge event topped by Joshua.
“Nigeria is desperate to have an event out there with him and they have money,” Hearn said. “He has his background out there, his parents are Nigerian. They love him out there. They sent a film crew from Lagos to the [Eric] Molina press conference. They want Joshua badly, they all do but what you are giving up is pay-per-view and gate receipts in the UK. They have to come up with $10 million if they want a Joshua fight. That is the price. Some people have it, some don’t.”
Interestingly, it was the sum of $10 million that enabled Foreman and Ali to get it on in Zaire in 1974, with King getting President Mobutu to part with an amount of money that was almost unthinkable for a boxing match back then. Hearn now has creative and lofty ideas for Joshua. But first comes this Saturday’s defence against a determined and hungry Molina (anyone else smell upset?!) and then, all being well in Manchester, a massive fight with former king Wladimir Klitschko, probably at Wembley next April.
If he can come through all that, maybe Joshua will set out to become a true world champion, with fights dotted across the globe, just as Ali and Foreman did.

I'm sick of hearing about Joshua to be honest. A "world champion" that hasn't beaten a top 15 opponent. I couldn't care less where he fights or against whom until he fights someone that's genuinely good by world standards.
The hype is ridiculous, Joshua is not a "genuine" world champion and I'm sick of hearing all the shit.

The hype is ridiculous but understandable to an extent. He looks good, and he knocks people out. That much is enough to get you pretty far. Yes, he's not beaten anyone particularly good but he's beaten people to a reasonably decent standard for where he is in terms of fights. the likes of martin, breazeale and molina, all within the space of eight months, is acceptable for a guy who's 15/16/17-0. Fury went on to beat Wlad but at the same stage he was fighting Firtha and Pajkic and getting sat on his backside.
He's not 'the' world champion but in an era when the likes of Briggs, Liakhovich, Ibragimov and Valuev all became world champions by beating pretty middling opposition he is as well. He took the easy route but what do people expect when you have a guy like Martin with the title?

True enough. Either way it was a fight that made sense for him. Martin without a title was a reasonable opponent for a guy in Joshua's position.

Tyson Fury isnt boxing for the forseable future so im still sticking with my comment.

Eddie Hearn seems to have lost his marbles if he believes this. I imagine it's just a press release. Rumble in the Jungle was an economic disaster for Zaire. People are more clued up now. Some African corrupt dictator propping up a sports event won't be tolerated.
Or Eddie Hearn has started on the road to being a deluded megalomaniac who thinks he has the Midas touch and can do no wrong.
Or maybe it's a messianic complex and he actually believes he has come to save British, no World boxing.
He maybe by British Boxing's Nero and will crash and burn in flames whilst wanking himself off and talking to himself about how great he is.....

Anthony Joshua vs. Izu Ugonoh in Nigeria would be fun.
vs. Jun Long Zhang in China would be fun aswell.
If these countries are willing to bid huge money to stage the event, why not pimp him out?
As long as the times suit the UK PPV audience cant see it making much difference (UFC has done it in the UK and Aus for the US PPV audience)...

Like him or not, Hearn is a master at getting people talking about his fighters and that's a large part of what promoters are paid for.

There's regularly talk about holding title bouts in exotic locations (Pac-May in Dubai!), but it doesn't seem to happen often.
And of course AJ was also going to fight Wlad, Haye, and Parker on Dec 10th, but he ended up with Eric Molina.

Yes, and if you forget the title then stopping Martin and Breazeale is very good development.
I'm happy with how he's coming along.
Only thing I objected to was the pre Whyte fights in which basically a novice pro was headlining against guys who weren't punching.

I just avoid
all of that shizzle. He might be a nice guy and he might be good, but I’ve seen enough on here to take away my interest.
It’d be interesting if another Lennox Lewis came through now....because the hype would be equally as bad, to the point it might actually do him a mis-service. As a general rule, I suppose, let the fists do the talking.

I agree with you about his record and World title, but I enjoy watching him fight. Do you consider Eric Molina to be a top 15 opponent?
