Anthony Joshua says he could retire from boxing in five years

Anthony Joshua hopes to fulfill his ambitions and make his fortune in five years -- and then retire.

The IBF world heavyweight champion makes a second title defence against American Eric Molina (25-3, 19 KOs) at the Manchester Arena on Saturday.

But having only begun his bid to dominate the heavyweight division when he turned pro after winning gold at the 2012 Olympics in London, the 27-year-old is already considering the possibility of getting out of the boxing game early.
"Maybe I'll be around for another five years," Joshua said. "The legacy I leave will be I've come up the hard way and I've stayed true to myself. I was a kid from Finchley [in north London] who went to the gym to make something of myself, to get fit. I wasn't chasing money. I was just on a self-development course.

"I can finish in five years provided everything goes to plan. One hundred per cent I could walk away from boxing now, it's all about being happy, and I'm happy. As long I'm happy that is all that matters. I don't do it for the money, I don't do it for the glory nights."

Everything he says sounds like it's from a boxing platitude generator.

5 years, thats around 6 or 7 fights. I think we will see AJ beaten in that time period. Ive heard a sneeky whisper there is a kid from Dublin to watch who is unbeaten in 9.

Also Tommy Morrison's son Trey Lippe is making waves over the pond unbeaten in 12, all stoppages and stopped highly regarded Ed Lattimore (12-0) in the first. Lippe's next outing is against Ty Cobb who incidentially was stopped in 1 by Deontay Wilder. So Lippe is someone to watch.

The issue with AJ is that he is almost like the enigma Frank Bruno, we never knew how good he was until he faced James Smith. But the signs were on the wall when he fought Floyd Cummins. AJ will either carry on knocking guys out early on and be very lucky that he isnt caught but on the other hand he may well be caught and freeze like Bruno did. No one knows how good AJ is, but there are certainly guys such as Lippe who are fighting regular and seem more relaxed.

Trey Lippe is no-one to worry about at the moment, as far as AJ is concerned. Lippe is very raw.

Has Joshua been cutting and pasting interview responses from Khan, Haye etc.

Nobody cares if you're here for 1 year or 10 years if you carry on fighting shit opponents

As long as I can remember, there has been fighters who will achieve blah blah then retire at the top blah blah.

I think they just reprint the same articles and change the names.

Total fcking stupid story that makes no logical sense and has no meaning.

Do you know how YOU will feel in five years? (bearing in mind most of us can predict where I lives will be in 10 years) But a boxer will know how they feel in the future when they could be anywhere, holding any title, living anywhere, earning god knows what, could be top of the hill still or a washed up punch bag?

If AJ has enough money to retire in 5 years then he doesn't need any of my money...

They all say that when they're on top & things are going well.

Remember David Haye; he was going to retire at 30 & go into acting? He's out there digging up dead heavyweights & signing to fight mouthy cruiserweights for pay cheques at nearly 37!

Remember Bernard Hopkins; he said he would retire at 40 because his mother said? He's still out there at 51!

Joshua might buck that trend, but it's easy for him to say things like that now.

He needs to wait & see before saying stuff like this.

its just generic waffle, they all talk like that when they are young, when they are a bit older they start to understand the importance of leaving behind a legacy

I'd be wary of the Irish gossip when it comes to fighting. Those Irish grapevines work fast, but they are like a game of Chinese whispers.

Thechump was closest, the lad actually had Bangers & Mash for tea.

:OhYes:

I was going to mention Haye & Hopkins.

They all say it and they all break it.
