So normally, when a fighter tests positive for something after a fight, the fight is declared a No Contest. In this case, Povetkin tested positive *before* the fight, which he won....so, how is that different than testing positive *after* a fight?

Obviously, the process will be followed and they'll test the B-sample, but if that comes back positive will they NC the result? It must have been weird for Povetkin to fight knowing that the result might not, or probably won't, stand. But with tickets sold and everything, I guess it makes sense to hold the event even if it's meaningless in the long run.

But maybe it won't be overturned, who knows. Lucas Browne's win over Chagaev still stands because the WBA decided he wasn't to blame.

And Povetkin tested negative 5 times before the positive result.

Something doesn't add up. How do you get busted on a test just before the fight but not tests leading up to it? It's like he juiced the day before the fight - but that wouldn't do anything for him, it takes time to work.

Either VADA is incompetent (some of their testing that should have busted him a long time ago, didn't) or corrupt (they purposely withheld failed tests until the last minute). And while I'm not claiming this as a fact, a third possibility that VADA falsifies results.

And if he was using, why did Povetkin agree to VADA? No one was forcing you him to do it, so why even take the risk?

That's actually a great case study. If I recall (and Google) correctly, Jones won but tested positive after the fight, both A and B samples, yet the result still stands even though he was eventually stripped of the title (and ordered to fight a rematch?)

In the rematch, Jones tested positive *before* the fight -- thus the fight was cancelled.

They probably felt they had to inform his camp to avoid lawsuits for failing to disclose the information. And were hoping he would just go though with the fight anyway. Which he might have, had the bout's sanctioning remained for determining Wilder's mandatory.
