It's not easy to come out and talk about stuff like this so openly, especially as someone from his world. Hopefully he is getting the help he needs and can move forward in his life. Raising mental health issues at a time when mental health services are being torn down is only a good thing. All sorts of people experience these and similar issues throughout their lives and we, as a society, should be doing more to support these people, not making essential services harder to access.

He was on R5 yesterday, sounded pretty rough.

Two ways to look at it, the other being that sometimes it's better to grin and bear it and not join the public woe is me circus. Labelling yourself as a depressive isn't really going to help and it seems a lot of millionaires are really unhappy (how many slebs who died this year went to their graves content?).
I hope he finds a way to be content. Hint: the answer may not be at the bottom of a bottle

I think this holds true a little in these cases.

Are we supposed to feel real sorry for people like Gazza and Hatton? Guys who scaled the heights, had the fame and the money and adulation that came with it, and they loved every second of it. Are we supposed to feel sorry because they no longer have that level of fame or success?

I find it hard to have too much sorrow for them to be perfectly honest. Sure, it's sad to see and I like them both but there are about a million other 'feel sorry' for cases ( and about 5 million 'I don't want you to feel sorry for me' cases ) in the UK alone that exceed their plight!

Ricky isn't skint at all. His car is worth more than most houses. As someone who has struggled with addiction, I feel empathy for him. Saw him a couple of months ago and he didn't look good.

Can happen to anyone. Good friend of mine, happy home life, good social group, lovely Mrs, fairly rich. Struggled with it very badly. No amount of saying 'you're fine' makes it fine. You can be a millionaire and still get ill you know.

I feel sorry for him, money and fame can do terrible things to people, including him and also the people around him. He definitely has addictions and he needs to recognise those fully and cut them out altogether if he is to have a chance of being happy. I still think he might be one of those people who deludes himself that he can still 'just have a few pints' etc.

My mums got depression,i had an uncle kill himself when I was stilla kid and ive got a cousin with bipolar so ive seen 1st hand what depression can do but I don't see the point in moaning about it if your not willing to try and change,1st step is admitting you have a problem,Ricky done that years ago yet all I see is him tweeting pics from Tenerife etc with the lads,drinking and depression do not mix

It's a horrible condition and I feel for the guy. I've had my own battles with it since I was about 18 although it took me a few years to get help. I have to take medication everyday and I can't go without it. I'm up and down like a whores drawers! But as HoS says you're not supposed to drink etc... And I still do stupidly. Sometimes it's manageable but most of the time I struggle. If I have a few one night I'm generally ok but if one night turns in to two and I hit the class A then it sometimes takes me days to get back to myself! It's definitely something I'll be looking to address in the new year if I can.

Ricky has had several cries for help and I hope he gets the help he needs before it's too late because everyone has a breaking point.

I wouldn't say he's been spoilt he's worked hard to get to top of boxing and he was one of the best this country has produced, he's got all the issues out the ring which he needs to deal with but boozing all the time is not the right way to go about it it's a depressant alcohol, you feel alright when your boozing then it's the come down after which will make him worse. I do feel sorry for him but there's people far in far worse situations unfortunately

Ricky believes his dad ripped him off, took money that was supposed to have been paid to Billy Graham for himself, hence the financial dispute he ended up in with Graham, which has now all been resolved.

Mental health problems affects people from all walks of life and I have sympathy with anybody who suffers with it .

I think unless you have been a sufferer yourself you probably won't have the same understanding of it .

Hope he gets on top of his demons soon .

People suggesting coke and drink are problems in that they worsen depression are correct. But depressed people are far more likely to have addiction / substance abuse problems.

To just say 'get off the drink' is not in the least bit helpful and trivialises the problems that surround and lead to addiction.

Depression is awful I have been there, but thinking back a lot of it boils down to feeling sorry for yourself, some people don't know how good there life is, just because there not world champions or in the news every two minutes some think life is bad!! Need to have a good look at themselves and stop feeling that the world owes them something

Vicious circle that. Feel sorry for anyone going through it.

You're right, to an extent. People who are depressed tend to reach out for substances to fill a hole in their life or to temporarily lift their mood.

But ultimately depression + alcohol + drugs = bigger problem.

You're much better trying to fill the gap by living your life in the present and learning to appreciate the MOSt important things - family, kids, friends, life itself. It seems to me that Ricky can't let go of his past and is stuck in a very vicious cycle of self-abuse and of abusing those who really had his best interests at heart. I hope he doesn't end up a Gazze-esque figure with a few sad hangers on left and his real family all gone. He's just addicted to highs, to a dopamine rush, real life must be so much of a let down compared to the highs he's had.
