Gary Cornish (23-1, 12 KOs) has quit his day job to focus full-time on boxing, teaming up with MGM Scotland and Billy Nelson while leaving his Inverness boxing gym and former trainer behind.

“The Highlander” last fought on the 24th of June 2016 against Tomas Mrazek; referee Kevin McIntyre scored the fight 60-54 to Cornish.

16 months ago Cornish faced off in the ring with now IBF World Champion Anthony Joshua. Looking back on that fight and discussing what he learned, he told Ringnews24.com:

“Pretty much everything – the atmosphere, the stage – I learnt a side of boxing I’ve never seen before. All the exposure and all that I got for that fight, it was a really good learning experience for me.

Bold move quitting his job. I assume he's got a trade to fall back on? I can't see him making any noise domestically but all the best to him.

The big guy would be better re locating further down south to guarantee a more frequent supply of sparring partners..good luck anyways

He's a joiner, isn't he?

No idea why he didn't go for it full time ages ago. I mean, he's rubbish. There's always that.

Joining is something he can still do years from now, but the shelf life for a boxer is much shorter. I don't think he'll go much further than he has, but at least now he probably won't look back a decade on and brood over where he could've gone with more dedication.

The shelf life is much shorter. It may seem he has a screw loose but he doesn't. Altho he does come across as a bit wooden at times.

And now we have a fight for either the Haye-Bellew or Joshua-Klitschko bill.

Wilder has perked up at the prospect of a new title defence now Cornish is going full time.

Dallas then Sexton with the aim of a Commonwealth title shot by the end of the year? Badly needs to step up from journymen and novice eastern block cruisers.

He's no superstar but could be in good, meaningful domestic fights if the will is there

Once our current crop of British level HW move onto euro level I can see Cornish being in the mix.
Allen, Cornish, Sexton and Lewison etc

Billy Nelson will improve Cornish no end. His defence will tighten up, he'll stay in range pressurising the other guy constantly, he'll shorten his punches and he'll become much fitter.
I don't know how far he'll go, but he's got all the physical attributes. I say - well done, son, give it a bash.

I sink that Cornish will 'be day'sperate to prove his victory against Thomas Mrazek wasn't a flush in the pan

I have no doubt Billy will transform Cornish. He worked wonders with Burns early on. I'm looking forward to see what fights can be made near the end of 2017.
