Top trainers are the ones who are lucky to get most promising or even already established best boxers. I am sure that there are outstanding trainers we don't know about yet, because they are working with poor material.

Unless they have a track record of working with and improving a number of fighters it's always difficult to tell whether a boxer looks good due to their trainer or if a trainer looks good due to their boxer.

Prime examples are Virgil Hunter and Eddie Reynoso. Hunter has had Ward since he was a kid and has been very successful, but aside from Ward I'm really not sure he's shown that he's anything special. The likes of Khan and Berto don't seem to have made huge improvements since working with him imo. Reynoso has trained Canelo since he was a kid and as far as I'm aware doesn't bother with any other big names, so it'd be interesting to see what he's like with other fighters.

Form plays a part in this but can also give a false picture

Take Tesco Joe Gallagher. His gym is packed so he works with a number of good fighters, not just one.
Some he's taken late, others from early in their career

A couple years ago, everything came together at one time, he had a long run of wins in his stable and ended with a good few fighters picking up titles at verious levels..

A year or so passes and his fighters start dropping belts and losing fights.

Joe was looked at by British boxing as some kind of coaching messiah and now he looks like a dud, particularly after some of his tactical decisions recently.

The truth lies somewhere in between. He was never the greatest trainer these shores have ever seen and equally, he hasn't become a bad trainer over night.

A run of form can colour our picture of a trainer but it can give a false impression.

It's a great question. To me, I think that the trainer of the year goes to Robert Garcia for his work with Abner Mares. I NEVER thought that Abner would ever hold another belt again and his performance last month in winning the world title was impeccable. You have to give Garcia credit for his work with him.

You can see it in Garcia's face when his fighters hands are raised how much he cares for his fighters. He'd be my trainer if I were a good boxer and not a desk jockey.

Not sure, but last year Able Sanchez was easily trainer of the year.

Gassiev had a huge win over Lebedev as a substantial underdog according to a lot of posters (not sure about the actual odds).

Shafikov had a tremendous year where he kept from becoming a gatekeeper with a big win over Herring and then goes on to have a fantastic win over Commey. Pretty much sealed him as a legitimate contender once again.

Ponomarov had his best year with two big wins.

Ruiz does very well against Parker. Lots were expecting Parker to win rather easily too.

Yes, based on 2016 results, it is Sanchez.

Abel Sanchez is a great trainer and is building a great reputation in the sport of boxing. I know he trains world champions like GGG and Gassiev, but I also really like what he did with Barrera. It's a shame Sanchez and Barrera stopped working together in Big Bear. Sully left to be closer to home in Miami.

Few do.

In general terms, the best trainers are the ones who are able to get the best out of their fighters.

Without inside knowledge it is impossible to asses who is best at doing that.

I don't know if he's top, but I like Jesse Reid's style for some reason.
