Last seen going to war with Keith Thurman in last summer’s FOTY candidate, former IBF welterweight champ Shawn Porter is ready to make his return to the ring soon. According to Porter’s father and trainer Shawn Porter Senior, who spoke with The Las Vegas Review Journal, fellow former welterweight champ Andre Berto is the preferred comeback opponent.

“Shawn is great. His weight is good, he’s looking for a fight,” Porter Snr said. “We’re having trouble getting someone to accept a fight against Shawn. We’re hopeful something gets done soon. Right now, we’re really pushing hard for Andre Berto. He fought Floyd Mayweather and went 12 rounds with him. He’s a high-level guy with a high-level name. We want that fight, and I was just told by a reporter that Andre wants to fight Shawn, too. So he’ll be receiving a call from us today.”

A Porter-Berto fight could well prove exciting, as do most fights involving Porter. Berto has been largely inactive over the last nine months or so, last fighting, and winning, against Victor Ortiz in their rematch last April; Berto improving to 31-4(24) with the easy stoppage win. Berto is still young enough at age 33 to perhaps make another run at the title.

Porter wins convincingly. I thought he beat Thurman.

He probably should've said "The winner of Algieri/Berto" because there's a good chance that's not gonna be Berto.

I thought it was a done deal to be on the Thurman/Garcia undercard? I know I'd much rather see Algieri/Berto than Porter/Berto. Algieri vs Berto is a 50/50 fight to me. Porter vs Berto is a guaranteed Porter victory.

That fight is rancid. Porter should foght Vasquez. Have it be in Youngstoen part way between Pittsburgh and Cleveland.

There had definitely been reports that Berto would be fighting Algieri. I think Porter should target someone who isn't occupied. It would be a different concept if Porter was targeting the Berto - Algieri winner, which would be reasonable, but then he'd have to wait a while for that fight to happen.

I don't understand some of the matchmaking being done these days. Why in the world would a promoter make this fight? Porter has absolutely nothing to gain in this fight, only to something to lose. At this point in Porter's career, he's earned only big fights. He's proved that he'll get in there with anyone. So why chance it against a guy that has been beaten badly by some average boxers? Porter deserves better than this.

Cotto and Kirkland is another dumb fight that comes to mind. Cotto has nothing to gain with a win over Kirkland.

If the scoring was based on dick and rabbit punches, then yes he definitely beat Thurman.

Why not ? at least it would be fun fight. Porter will stop him in late rounds IMO
