Axel Schulz vs Zeljko Mavrovic

As an European I was always intreagued by this possible match but it never happened unfortunately. What do you think who would have won and how - both in their prime of course. We know that Schulz had more difficoult matches and was really robbed against Foreman. Whereas Mavrovic had his last fight against Lewis where he was solid but as it was his last fight we haven't seen him against other good fighters.
I both know, and so I was especially interesting this match.

I know, they are not Ali, Frazier, Foreman, but I would think that at that time it was a good match.

Hard to say who would win, but I'm 100% sure it would go the full distance. It's very hard to estimate Mavrovic's potential considering he never fought any top-30 fighters other than great Lennox Lewis. His second best opponent was Julius Francis. Shulz also beat Francis but he had at least six opponents who were better than Julius - Wlad, Moorer, old Foreman, Akinwande, Botha, old Smith.
Shulz also beat Mavrovic by 3-2 decision at the European Championships in 1989. But Shulz's amateur win and far superior level of opposition (besides Lennox of course) still aren't convincing enough to favor him in this fight. It would be 50/50 fight in my opinion and I think there is a good chance it would end by a split decision for any of them or even by a draw.

What happened to Mavrovic? He just seemed to disappear. He was a good fighter.

Already before the fight with Lewis for his health and after a fight he decided to retire.
After that, he was not even close to boxing but is devoted to business, a few years ago is back trainings and thinking about going back but changed his mind after the injury.

Mavrovic would have beaten Schulz on points, Schulz was a good fighter but the Foreman performance flattered him - he won that fight convincingly but got jobbed by the judges.

Yes, he was starting to lose his muscle mass, his weight even before the fight with Lewis. But I remember Shelly Finkel said Mavrovic was one of the options for Tyson's October 1999 return after another prison term. I believe he said it in May or June 1999. Among the others options, named by Finkel, were Shulz (who eneded up fighting Klitschko in September), Briggs and Norris. I was really hoping they'd chose Mavrovic, but Tyson's team took the easiest option IMO in Orlin Norris.
Then Zeljko was scheduled to fight Hasim Rahman in November 6, 1999, but pulled out of the fight and was replaced by Oleg Maskaev, who upset Rahman by KTFO.
I also remember Mavrovic was tentatively scheduled to fight Wladimir Klitschko for EBU belt on March 18, 2000, but later was replaced by Paea Wolfgramm.
So, considering Mavrovic still had fights scheduled in 99-00, I think was still hoping to return to the ring in that period, while trying to overcome his ilness, but later gave up becuse he lost too much weight.

Ok thnx. I did not know about the possible fight with Tyson and Klitschko. It was in the hall with us was not mentioned.
After the fight with Lewis is no longer coming to the gym to practice and that's all I know.

Mavrovic is one of those guys I'd really liked to have seen again and it is a shame things for various reasons did not work out for him in the ring.
I seem to recall a few of the UK newspapers being a bit sniffy about him - who exactly is this bloke Maloney has found for Lennox etc - but he gave a good account of himself and Lewis said that it was not straigthforward and the guy was decent....good skills and mobile for a Euro heavy.
Boxrec have Mavrovic at 6ft 3in but for some reason I thought he was much more like 6ft 5in and had a long reach as well.
Crazy haircut as well!
I'd fancy him to beat Schulz based on the fact that Axel was not really so dominant at European title level....Mavrovic had Julius Francis out of there in 8 rounds and it took Schulz the full 12 for example.
Of course, fighting Schulz in Germany at that juncture would have pretty much needed a stoppage and in Schulz's defence he did well in some losing fights against quality opposition....went in with Moorer and Foreman and should have got a draw against GF.
