Good match. Maskaev is slow and faded but has that spectacular win over Rahman to bolster his reputation. Danny, if he's up for it, can take this guy to the cleaners.

Saw Maskaev Francis and Oleg didnt look that great..

Maskaev has a decent reputation in the States (was once lined up for a fight with Tyson in fact) and American TV will presumably be screening it, so it makes sense all round.
I like this match. A smart match. Talk of Brewster and Klitschko at this stage was always just talk.

Williams and the giant Russian will duke it out for the vacant WBU heavyweight title at the 10,000 capacity arena.

Danny Williams will fight Oleg Maskaev on October 9 at the ExCeL Centre in London's Docklands in his first fight back since beating Mike Tyson.

Williams and the giant Uzbekistani will duke it out for the vacant WBU heavyweight title at the 10,000 capacity arena.

Ironically Maskaev, 29-5 (23), was linked to a fight with Tyson and was also due to spar with Williams as he prepared for his showdown with Iron Mike.

But the pair never met behind closed doors.

Maskaev has been in with some of the best names in the heavyweight division - including Oliver McCall and David Tua - and also boasts wins over Julius Francis and Hasim Rahman.

The 35-year-old turned professional in 1993, and is now based out of Staten Island, New York.

"I wanted to make sure Danny was kept busy and offered him this fight in October," said promoter allegedly.

"After this, we will keep going wherever the money is because when Danny fought Mike I told him it was his ticket to the big American fights.

"I've had talks with Showtime about doing a show involving Danny in December."

Warren - who has also been in discussions with HBO - added that he would be happy to accommodate any demands Tyson has for a rematch with Williams.

"Danny has got Mike's number," he said.

Matt Skelton defends his British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles against Keith Long on the undercard, while John McDermott challenges for the vacant English heavyweight crown.

I find it strange that Frank is billing this as a keep busy fight. surely he should have bigged up maskaev?

Danny should win, but may well get ko'd. I think a bet on maskaev would be sensible. The bookies may go crazy over danny.

Strange match, so Maskaev on Channel five the other day and by heavyweight standards he's still not too bad and has got decent stamina. There looks like there is still life in him.

Of course, the press has been very contratictory on their sparring sessions, Danny said a few years ago words to the effect of "I know I'm world class, cause I'm doing Maskaev in sparring all the time". However, Maskaev was used as a sparring partner for Danny's last fight and the papers reported that Maskaev was outclassing him. That is the interesting part of this fight - I hope the 2nd tabloid report was just fabrication and the way FW has discussed this fight, it seems that it must be the case. However, I am still surprised at this choice.

Its a backward step from Tyson, at 31 he should be looking at forward or sidewise steps (Tyson or a world title). Its a bit too dangerous to call a warm up. However, a win would firmly place him in the world class bracket and would dispell the doubters who blame Tyson's legitimate injury on his defeat.

As far as non-title fights are concerned the too fighters I would not pit Williams in immediately after Tyson are Jeremy Williams and Maskaev.

Now everybody thinks Danny is a world beater, whats the odds he'll fall on his arse under the pressure of expectation and look like a joke.

Considering the avilability of other champions and contenders, then Maskaev is no surprise and has the punch to keep Williams honest in training.

Easy fight to make, just wish the WBU bauble would be incinerated on the night.

Do you really believe that injury story? I for one don't believe it for a second, and neither do a number of American journalists I spoke to. Ask yourself this....don't you think it odd Mike wasn't even limping out of the arena?

Don't you think it was odd that Finkel didn't allow anyone near Tyson, wanna know why? Tyson would have been honest, and have said straight that Danny won fair and square, which would have ended his career.

Decent fight - doesn't need the WBU tag line though ( in fact I thought Danny already had this junk belt? Maybe it was the Intercontinental interim version? )

Maskaev is still a dangerous puncher though, with a fragile chin it seems. Danny better make sure he lands first, because Oleg will be well up for this fight - if he beats the man who beat the man, he's back in the big time.

This would have been a good match for Danny on July 30 if he hadn't been offered the Tyson fight. He was sitting at home with two easy wins after the Sprott loss, and it would have geed him up a bit.
Howver, after defeating Mike Tyson, it's a step down really. Maskaev is absolutely unknown to most casual observers, so the capitalising from the July 30 shocker doesn't happen. However, we hardcore fans know that Maskaev is a little dangerous, and could pose problems.

It wouldn't surprise me if Danny can't get himself up for this one. It's not against a big name, and he is expected to win. Thus, all the usual problems come back.

I see Danny struggling to win this one. It's not what he wanted after Tyson, and it's for the WBU title.

I think a step down was pretty much inevitable. Most of the guys who people would rank above Tyson are tied up, and, as others have suggested, there is little time to negotiate a bigger test for Danny. If Danny's head is right, this should be a decent keep-busy fight before another big match-up.

If danny wants to be a real world champ he should despatch Oleg.

This is actually very clever from FW, DW is the hottest property in Brit boxing at the moment, not to us, but to the man in the street he is now known. Courtesy of his destruction of Tyson.

So get him a home bout, for some Crap belt call it a WorLd title fight, get a big arena, add more heAvyweights to attract more folk in,watch the dosh roll in.
