I go to all boxing, massive pro shows, small hall, amateur, unlicensed, even bare knuckle. I think the amateurs are the only ones where every fight is 50-50 and everyone is trying. I was at one last night and the quality was brilliant, especially now the head guards have gone. And you can get right next to the ring. When I go to small hall, I watch my guys, then I'll go home. It's boring. The huge shows is more a day out with the lads to be honest. Unlicensed.... Well, it depends on the show but some are comical.

Mickey is there much talent in Henrys Gym?

There's not a great deal of boxing shows in Wales, but I go whenever I can. Must admit I've never been to see the amateurs though, I never used to really enjoy it with the beadguards and stupid scoring, always felt like a different sport to me. Maybe I'll try it one day now they've made it a bit more like the pros.

Yes, probably more at York ABC, a really good one at Legions and two very good ones at Jorvik.Theres a couple of decent ones doing unlicensed. Henry's hasn't been going that long so he's started everyone from scratch. My home gym is actually Jorvik, a stones throw from where your sons bird lived. I go to all Henry's shows and pop in to see him occasionally, but if a Jorvik guy was fighting one of his guys, I'd be firmly in the other corner. It's great to see boxing flourishing, and if you get lads on from two different gyms boxing, it sells out. My son said last night "how many alright Mickeys? Are you going to get tonight?", we parked up, went into the Co-Op and a guy said "Alright Mickey, how are you?"....

I went to an amateur show over a year ago now at Whitby where Henry had some lads fighting. I only went as a mates dad lives in whitby and his charity organisation did the show. It was ok, but i only went to get glimpse at Henry. Fish and chip supper was shite though!

Attending professional boxing is so different now, and much less exciting. In the good/bad old days ,at the small hall shows every boxer on the promotion was within a short travelling distance so you had fans of EACH boxer up on their feet cheering for their man and this created a great atmosphere. You also had regulars who deliberately made themselves unpopular and everybody turned up to see him get beat, much like Mick McManus etc at the wrestling. Now small hall shows are simply about local lads selling sufficient tickets to make the promotion viable and invariably beating a less than capable journeyman, with his totally unknowledgeable supporters celebrating as if he was a world champion.
Amateur boxing back in the day was very similar, and with the headguards now gone has the chance to make a dramatic comeback. But no grown men fight at amateur any more its only youngsters. There's nothing like a pair of fit experienced 30 year olds fighting for personal ride.
