Does anyone know why Ernesto Marcel retired right after winning the featherweight title from Alexis Arguello? (Doing my featherweight homework.)

I think he had made enough money and promised his family he would stop when he did. Something along those lines. No oddities or anything.

It was a brutal fight... I think that's why.

Boxing purses were not big paydays back in the 70s unless you were a heavyweight superstar.

Ernesto "Nato" Marcel retired at young age. Interestingly, he never made a comeback.

He should be in the IBHOF.

Anyone know any details of his last fight before the Arguello bout ? Samuel Serrano, who doesn't get alot of respect on BoxRec, took him to a split decision.

Ernesto Marcel was the feather champ.. He defended it against Arguello

He'd promised his mother to retire. She had wanted him to stop fighting.
