I came across this heavyweight by doing some six-degrees-of-wlad.

He had a good looking record, 29(26)-0 against mediocre but not terrible opponents, but last fought a number of years ago.

Can anyone tell me more about him and why he stopped boxing?

Might be slightly off but from memory he struggled badly with a small step uo then was cherry picked to fight David Have but instead chose to retire as he felt he was getting thrown to the wolves and short changed.

Strange he never returned though.

Very weird. Big, in shape 25yo with heavy hands and an undefeated record against half -decent opponents gets an offer for a (presumably) big money fight against Haye, and he disappears from the scene forever.

I wonder what he is doing now.

Dont know but who da fvck was the manager of all them debutants? Throwing them in with a puncher on their debut fight is damn right disgustin,no wonder some guys turn to NFL or NBA rather than get badly managed and end up punchy

That's a good point - even weirder is that Boxrec was awarding him points for defeating them.

The last debutant he fought,jd had 13 k.os on his record,thats a disgrace the guy was probably beat before he entered the arena

His manager Stacy Goodson used to be a regular on here. Trailer park boxing that struck gold when he came across Chapman, a big white fella who could punch. Then they fed him what they could to get that record looking all nice. The cash out never happened though

Yeah, it's an odd decision that. (Though obviously I don't know the exact specifics.)

Would he have preferred to just fight stiffs all of his career? Even if he thought that Haye was going to lay the smack down on him, you'd still think he'd take the money, then retire. Isn't the whole point of sugar coating your career, that you're taking no risks until the big fight comes along?

Must be more to the story, I guess.

He was a factory worker who was on the toughman circuit and had no amateur background, pretty decent if I remember, managed by Stacy Goodson.

Last I heard from Chapman he was driving a cement truck in Arkansas

Yep, JD was a good guy, a tough guy managed by Stacy Goodson. I believe Michael Moorer trained him and had high hopes for him. Originally he was being groomed as a future cash out but a lot of people (included Moorer) thought he was better than that.

He retired to drive a truck instead. I'm not 100% sure of the reasoning, but I'm pretty sure it was to be able to provide for his families future without risking his health.

Agreed, it's just poor management and people not doing their research.

Though in fairness, BoxRec wasn't really about back in the early 2000s, it was nowhere near as prominent as it is today.

Could have possibly suffered a career ending injury during training?

Not in this case; They were guys who wanted to box and Stacy gave them an opportunity. Stacy card's were local club boxing at it's best (or worst depending on your point of view).
