When Alexis Arguello retired from boxing for good, his record was 82-8 (65 KO's) now his BoxRec record reflects 77-8 (62 KO's). Why was his record changed, anybody know?

Records are often inflated... It used to be that nobody took the time to check.

Or ... back in the middle '70s, managers and promoters could buy a 'win' from The Ring Magazine for $50 or $100, depending on the number of rounds you needed. The magazine was going under and needed funds; Oh yea, Don King was involved. - Even the 'bible of boxing' The Ring Record Book was tarnished by this mess; ended up containing the fabricated fights.

That was done in connect with the United State Boxing championships in 1977. A guy named Johnny Ort who worked for Ring was the one taking the bribes and faking the records. Most of the fighters in the tournament were King's. He wanted to inflate their records to get them into the tournament, which was televised by ABC. When it was found that King had done this, (and at least one decision appeared to be rigged) ABC pulled the plug on the tournament.

I don't think there have been other instances in which Ring has done this. Hope not anyway.

Don't know what the situation is regarding Arguello. Maybe the fights were really exhibitions; maybe they never took place at all. If I get a chance sometime I will check Arguello's Boxrec records against record books.
