HW division : the most important division or not ?

For me, HW is the most important division; what about you ? Why yes, or why not ?

Hard to say, depends what one means by "most important".

There are better weight classes based on the relative amount of talent.
But when you consider the interest the heavyweights receive, even when they are packed full of dross, you can't help but argue they are still the "most important" I suppose

In that case, not for me.

Simply because there are divisions with better fighters and better potential match ups. that's how I rate a division.

I think arbitrarily holding one division as the crown jewel of the sport because it contains men who happen to be taller and heavier than other divisions to be a pretty silly idea. but it's how the sport has always worked.

It is becoming more exciting since the setting of the Klitschko era, but that's probably not a ringing endorsement of the weight class; that it became more interesting because it's best fighter got old and made the division more competitive.

I must say, I do still pay a disproportionate amount of attention to the heavies when viewing historical bouts and know more of the history, again a symptom of the sports obsession with the big guys. More people know who Rocky Marciano is, than have heard of Ruben Olivares.
It's hard to escape

Traditionally-speaking, the heavyweight division is America's most important division, because they monopolised it until Lennox Lewis and the Klitschko's disposed of the US fighters with relative ease. It seems that big American kids can earn far more money and prestige engaging in other sports...

In terms of the global scene, the heavyweight division is of secondary importance, except for the UK, who gained moderate success with world-rated fighters like Fitzsimmons, Cooper, Bugner, Bent, Hide, Stewart, Akinwande, Bruno, Lewis, Haye, Fury & Joshua.

If I had one wish for this site, it would be automatically recognizing your IP address, to automatically ignore who you have on ignore. That way you wouldn't have to log in before ignoring the endless bullshit posts from Ferg/Rover/EnlightenedOne. Maybe its just me.

Yes it is, for me it's all about the best and the strongest and about the first guy to get KOed loses. A dwarf might be skilled, but will get KOed or injured more early against a giant anyway. It's like a fight between a men and a woman, like the olympics vs the paralympics, like a Porsche vs a Koenigsegg.

If the 100m was limited in weightdivisions I would still be most impressed by Usain Bolt, despite some dwarf might have a better running technic.

For me, the most important division is dependent on the talent pool in each division at a certain period of time. The HW division has not been the most important division in a long time.

That's like saying you like the WNBA because it has better players . . .
That comment isn't likely to happen, as I don't have the slightest idea what the WNBA is

For boxing's standing in the mainstream and with casual fans the HW division will always be the most important. Nothing captures the imagination quite like two top heavyweights colliding.

For fans of the sport of boxing? Probably not.

I have been following boxing more than forty years. I mean that we can speak about some kind of identification. For example, I respect Gonzalez, Rigo etc, etc, but, frankly, it is extremely difficult to identify with so tiny guys. Do you agree ?

Well i can enjoy the little guys fighting but to be honest I don't really follow the lower weights with much interest. But when someone like Lomachenko comes along I look out for his fights and I'm all over the Frampton Santa Cruz fight tonight. But I get your point to a extent, I'm 5'10 168lb and have always been most interested in the welter to super middle divisions - I don't personally enjoy watching heavyweights much!
