Luis Collazo (37-7, 20 KOs) delivered an early “Knockout of the Year” candidate with a sixth-round knockout of welterweight contender Sammy Vasquez Jr. (21-2, 15 KOs) Thursday night in the main event of Premier Boxing Champions on FS1 and FOX Deportes from Horseshoe Tunica Hotel & Casino in Tunica, Mississippi.

The Brooklyn-native Collazo started slow as Vasquez Jr. looked to control the fight with his movement and jab. The action began to pick-up in the third round as Collazo struck the first major blow of the fight, connecting on a right hand that sent Vasquez Jr. to the canvas.

Collazo said after the fight..

“There are a lot of great fights coming up in the welterweight division. I know Shawn Porter doesn’t have an opponent right now. I’m ready to get it on if he is.”

So much for the Sammy hype. Collazo has a very low KO %...less than Khan even.

The very same! There were a few dolts on here talking him up no end not so long ago! I was never impressed any time I've watched him.

Sum window lickers were mentioning him in the same breath as Brook, Thurman, Spence, Garcia, Porter etc....

Doesn't mean that he's a pillow puncher. Thurman would tell you that and he had Ricky Hatton out on his feet for a second. The undefeated Ricky Hatton.

I'm sure a fight Shawn Porter is the best thing for Collazo. Seems to me this would be a perfect time for Collazo vs Berto 2. A close fight that ended with a controversial decision many years, both fighters have had their ups and downs since, and both fighters are at about the same place in their careers at the moment. The winner of that one would have a solid case for a shot at a top guy in the division.

With this win Collazo has moved well beyond Berto.. This wasn't a fluke win.. This is a guy who, in all his fights with Champions and Contenders, has only been stopped by Thurman -- ... In this fight Collazo was cut worse than the Thurman fight, but he told his corner to "please close it" ... He got real tired of people calling him a loser and a 2nd rater... LC fought a very relaxed and heady fight.. He had confidence in his Boxing skills and his power -- and most importantly his defense. He fought the best fight of his life by a wide margin.

The other night Ronnie Shields' new white kid "The Cowboy" also got his ass handed to him - in the same type of fight.. by a 15-0 kid who stayed very calm and collected and stayed with his defense until he got the openings he needed to close the show. He stepped it up round by round and got the stoppage.

Collazo and Berto are right in the same place in my opinion. Good fighters that can't beat the best fighters in their divisions. No shame in that, but a fight between Collazo and Berto is an even matchup. That being said I do think Collazo would get the win in a rematch and avenge his loss from the past.

If Collazo fights Porter or someone like that though he loses clearly, most likely by a fairly clear decision 9 rounds to 3 or something like that.

A Berto fight means nothing at this point -- but if he wants to reverse his loss it would be an easy fight.. Maybe he should do it.. If he fights like this against Porter he has a chance to win.. He really picked his game up. and moved to another level Berto has never reached.

Collazo v Berto is a perfect undercard fight for a May or September PPV. It was a good fight the first time. I do think that Collazo would win a good fight.

The winner would definitely be a good candidate as an opponent for one of the top tier welters.

Just seen this. I guess nobody ever taught sergeant sammy that throwing shots with no head movement and your chin up is a bad idea.

Hatton, Berto, and Mosley were his almost best wins....and that was 8-10 years ago. Hatton moved up to 147 for the first time. He has failed every time he has stepped up in competition. He couldn't KO Khan, which speaks volumes. Anyone can deliver a big shot occasionally. Good body shot on Thurman, yes, but what else? I was hugely critical of Thurman...still am, for fighting Collazo after turning down the Spence fight. I wish he would have gotten KO'd. Khan almost had Collazo out from a body shot too, and he is far from a big puncher. Khan beat the piss out of Collazo, who fought stupid the way he was head hunting.

He was billed as a guy with heavy hands after KO'ing Vicious Victor Ortiz before the Khan fight. Maybe not pillow puncher, but far from a heavy puncher. Less than average power in my opinion.

Collazo is a decent gatekeeper.
