Where is the tipping point between hard puncher & concussive power?

I know this has been done to death, but watching Jnr last night got me thinking about the difference between him & his old mans punching power. Other than genetic differences between their respective parents, what is it that Jnr lacks to give him that truly devestaing power his dad had? Is it desire? Snr had it much tougher in life, and maybe that was present in every punch he threw. He really had to fight for his life from a young age, where as Jnr has pretty much had a silver spoon life along with the best coaching possible.
So what is it?

I think he could have decent power but he never seems to flow and just tries to line up big shots instead of them coming naturally, saw senior say he puts extra handwraps on so the punches are not as damaging but struggle to believe that

Timing. Jnr comes out and fights his own fight but timing is everything.

Yes, I was watching his footwork last night, he doesn't have a stable platform to deliver power shots, there's very little if any turning at the hip, which drastically reduces his punching power - he's really just generating the power from his upper body.

You're born with punching power it's a gift

Chris snr punches came from his ankles up through his waist and into his shoulders on a solid base, that's where the power came from basically better technique oh and that big lat spread.

You really are born with it. Some shake you with jabs. It's unexplainable, really.

It's very rare to get a real puncher. I watch a lot of amateur fights, hardly any knockdowns. Genuine punchers are few and far between.

Incredible to believe that Hearns only KO'd a handful of opponents in the ams

I wouldn't say Eubank Snr had concussive power.

Yup it's just something you have. It really is quite odd. No amount of weight training could ever make a difference.

Emanuel Steward says that Hearns didn't shut his fist properly when punching as an Amateur

I personally think it's bone strength and heavy hands - things that can't be trained, some people have hands like rocks and you know when they've hit you even if it's a clip it will hurt.
Technique/timing etc definitely part of it, but I've seen Eubank Jnr land really clean and he just doesn't seem to have that raw natural power to call on, maybe it's wrist diameter, hand size, bone density who knows but he generates ALL his power with the swings - he's one of those guys who has to get his whole body behind a punch to make it powerful rather than some boxers who can seem to summon power out of an arm punch.

Good point, Wharton's hands are ridiculous, and his brothers, who can knock people cold. And they were like that when they were kids.

Off topic slightly but the hand size comment got me thinking. Had a look to see if there was any boxers with extraordinarily large or small hands. Obviously Liston had stupidly big fists, something like 15 inches. I'd never noticed this before but it turns out that Mikey Garcia has ridiculously small fists. It's almost funny.

That's incredible, I always thought small hands played a part in some people not being able to punch, with some fighters you can tell their speed adds to the power, other fighters like Foreman rely on brute strength

Is it just me or did this image make anyone else think of this?

Pounds per square inch should be higher in smaller hands on a bigger body. Think of being hit with a hammer as opposed to a same weight malett type thing.
A little story about my first 'KO'
Without blowing my own trumpet I'd say I possess this rare gift. It was like an X-men moment at age 14 I'd discovered it. I was into Jui-Jitsu as a kid, and we were sparring. As I was tall, and came from another martial art background, I was chucked in with the adults. I was the youngest by 10 years or so. I did used to get a beating to be honest, which made me durable as an adult. I can't remember a punch or kick ever hurting me to be honest. Anyway, one of my instructors, (the main instructors cocky son) and a black belt & a kickboxer, was laying into me. I let a straight right go while he was trying to kick my head off, and knocked him spark out. He lay there still, and I actually though "sh!t, I'm dead". To add to the fact he'd been knocked out by a 14 yr od kid, I had also smashed his cheekbone.

Some of the punches Julian Jackson landed seemed almost effortless yet would leave his opponent sprawled out on the deck for minutes.

Wilder and Yarde never seem to load up either but almost always to score sickening KOs
