Luis Ortiz-Bermane Stiverne in Line For WBC Eliminator

Alexander Povektin has officially been removed from the World Boxing Council ratings following the positive result of the Russian’s ‘B’ sample last week.

Luis Ortiz could be set to benefit from the news as the talented Cuban is now rated at number two behind mandatory contender Bermane Stiverne. Povetkin and Stiverne were due to meet in December for the right to face champion Deontay Wilder, but the WBC could be ready to offer Ortiz the chance to earn his shot at ‘The Bronze Bomber.’

‘King Kong’ last fought when stopping David Allen on the Anthony Joshua v Eric Molina card at Manchester Arena late last year but had basically been waiting for a world title chance all year.

Highly ranked with both the WBA and WBC, Ortiz stands on the verge of contesting a belt with either in the coming months and does also have an opportunity against the winner of Joshua v Wladimir Klitschko to consider.

Ortiz is already the WBA's mandatory challenger to the upcoming fight between Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko, which takes place on April 29 at Wembley. There is no guarantee that Ortiz will get the winner, as the IBF has also mandated the winner of that contest to face Kubrat Pulev.

Ortiz would theoretically win this bout very easily, probably by stoppage, which is an opinion based on my belief that Stiverne's last two performances against Wilder and Rossy were incredibly poor.

That said, I'm not sure if this bout will take place, because isn't the winner of the Joshua-Klitschko fight already mandated by the WBA to face Ortiz, with both the Brit and the Cuban being members of Matchroom's stable of fighters?

I reckon the WBC’s title eliminator, when it is eventually staged, will actually involve Bermane Stiverne fighting Dillian Whyte, with the Brit inevitably emerging victorious via a lop-sided twelve round decision victory.

Stiverne is damn near 40 and was never that good to begin with. Why does this guy keep getting eliminators? Can't Ortiz just fight someone decent like Pulev? The HW division has been utterly ruined by inactivity and poor matchmaking.

Stiverne and Ortiz are the same age. Most HW's are over 32 years old

37 isn't a real bad age... but you need to have your most important fights before you're 39 or Father Time will start beating you down... You can fight into your 40's if you have superb skills and fight boxers and absorbers -- but a savage young attacker will beat you down because you're going to be a tad slow.

You're right, 37 is perfectly fine for HW's. It's not like speed is their main advantage.

HW's tend do always go past until 40.

Yes, they're close to the same age, but Ortiz is actually good. Stiverne has never been good.

Ali was dead at 37. James J Jeffries was dead at 37. Tyson was dead at 37. Bowe too. Strange how some hwts are still productive at 37 and beyond.

Oh no lol, it's getting more and more obvious, in the end he will get busted on some kind of doping 10 digits behind the , nobody ever heard about and everybody will believe Wada/Vada all over again.
That way Wilder will receive even more possibilitys to fight bums on short notice and his story simply continues for another few years.

Ortiz already has a title shot lined up for the WBA title. i doubt he goes down the WBC road. I can smell something fishy. He get's done by VADA.

I'd love to see this fight on a Brook/Spence undercard, but I think Luis Ortiz should be fighting Briggs for WBA regular, fornicate this Fres Oquendo, he's been after the belt for about 4 years, it's ridiculous.

Boxing is awful at times.

WBA was ordered by court to give Oquendo Championship Fight, years ago :brick:

So, WBA wasting time till he turn 60 or something :yay:

I figure Ortiz will win this pretty easy. I can picture a few sluggish rounds with neither fighter doing much but Ortiz winning the rounds with a jab, and then I figure he could take Stiverne out when he turns up the heat and lands some heavy shots.

Outside of a big right hand KO I don't see much shot for Stiverne.

I would be highly surprised if Stiverne would even be competative against Hammer for example, let alone Ortiz lol.
In fact I think the match is quite dangerous for Stiverne his longtime health.
