His record is very very underwhelming.

Some guys can only climb to summit once. His title winning effort was one of the best fights you will ever see. It showed what fighting men are all about and boxing history is richer for it.

I was at around 10 of his fights

Atmosphere at them was better than any boxer has at the moment.

He was very average and only won wba intrim title

Taylor can get that atmosphere when she fights in ireland

Good point. The fight when he won the title was a classic. Was a real fight against a real opponent as well so you have to give him credit.

Always seems a decent guy away from the ring whenever I've heard him talk etc...

Troll, how many world titles did you win?

The Cordoba fight is one of the best I've seen as it happened (though the commentary was absurdly biased), and it's probably at the top of my list for fights I've watched while contributing to the RBR here.

I can only imagine how it felt for Dunne's supporters.

I was just talking to a mate about Dunne against Frampton, Quigg, LSC etc. I don't think he'd make it to the second half of the fight. Just got me thinking about exactly how good he actually was. Looks like a case of really coming around at the right time. He wouldn't get a look in in todays division

I think he'd struggle to do much at the highest level of the division as it is today. I would favour Frampton, LSC, Russell, Mares, Valdez, Selby, and Quigg over him.

I think Warrington, Ryan Walsh, Galahad, Isaac Lowe would beat him.

It takes a bit of going down the rankings to find guys that I'd comfortably back him against.

Maybe but none of them have done anything to shout about even close to world level.

Ireland was a the peak of an economic boom. The arenas were electric. I backed Cordoba to win by stoppage, at the time it was the biggest bet I had ever laid on one fight. But I was standing on my seat going berserk when he won along with everyone else there. Still the best fight I have ever been at live. Weak record and wasn’t able to sustain the dizzying heights of the WBA regular title holder but will always be remember for the night he beat Cordoba in a sensational slobberknocker.

Dunne beat Cordoba who went on to give Rigondeaux his hardest fight to date, so there are plenty of worse world champions.

Anthony Joshua and Liam Smith are both worse world champions based on their record so far.

Fair enough to be honest, and Caballero was a proper monster at the weight at the time

Agreed. Bernard always said that his ambition was to win a World Championship - and once he did it, he never had the same fire in his belly for the sport.

Caballero was a treat to watch in his prime.

Cordoba was good, but hardly a monster. He was on a similar level to Sidorenko and Poonsawat.

He had also beat Caballero, who was #1 in the division.

Lets be honest not many, outside of Ireland, gave him a chance against Cordoba, so lets not be revisionists and do down the victory with the benefit of hindsight.

Still annoyed we never got Poonsawat vs Rigo...
Dunne vs Cordoba was bloody brilliant, but that rest was Dunne essentially putting in a performance of a life time and never being able to come close to it a second time

I thought he was a decent fighter myself. Saw him live in Dublin. Fun show.
