if 1 is a fat boy and 10 a prime pacquiao, than i would say kovs condition stamina is around 6,5.

his stamina is good, but far from being phenomenal liks floyd, marquez....

lucky for his opponents that is stamina is just okay. would his stamina be great than he would easily be the best boxer p4p on the planet. you would have arguably the #1 puncher p4p chasing you without losing energy for 12 straight rounds, just hell for any opponent. #1 reason why prime GGG & prime pac were so succesful cause they had/have the energy from 1-12, opponents had to deal with the risk of getting t/ko'd at any giving moment no matter first or last round

No , but there are phases of the fight were he doesn't punch as super human strong as in the first 5 rounds, even when he isn't punching his hardest he is still hitting hard, and seems to catch a second wind with the concussive power in the later rounds. Guy is a great fighter because he can box to go along with hitting hard, he is not just a slugger. Although not on the level Tommy Hearns he is similar in that he can box well and hit really hard. His mind set though is more Roberto Duran.

He tired badly towards the end of the Ward fight but whether that was down to stamina issues or having to wrestle his way through most of the rounds I'm not sure.

I think a lot of it had to do with taking all those body punches that Ward was landing. Those will sap your strength.

:TU:

He was very sneaky with a lot of those, nice shots as they went into a clinch and Ward landed them regularly. It was no mystery why he gassed.

Ward can't crack an egg. Kovalev just has average stamina and paces himself against opponents that aren't easy to take out, i.e. Hopkins, Chilemba, Ward, etc., like any sane fighter would do.

I thought Kovalev won the 12th round and had as much in the tank as Ward.

Nah.. Floyd fought at a snail's pace.. He was very defensive and threw 1 and 2 punches at a time.. Marquez was a counterpuncher like Mayweather, and he'd wait for you to lead.. It takes much more energy to carry the fight and push the pace -- a la Golovkin, Kovalev, Usyk, Monzon, and Lomachenko, Duran was loaded with gas for the 1st Leonard fight and never showed fatigue -- for the rematch he wasn't feeling it so much.. Frazier expended a ton of energy in Ali I.. But he couldn't duplicate that killing effort.. Marciano definitely kept coming and throwing for 15..

I wouldn't say Henry Armstrong, because against weak hitters he could bully them with head-butts, shouldering, shoving, and elbowing -- but against tougher, stronger, meaner ass busters, such as Beau Jack, Ray Robinson, and even the weaker hitting Fritzie Zivic, he got out-roughed and beaten up.. And I wouldn't say Hagler, because he slowed way down against Leonard -- when Marv had a lot of gloves in his face.

I think that Sergey's stamina and conditioning has improved greatly along with his technique. He's still undefeated in my mind and I hope that the rematch is signed because he now knows not to leave it up to any judges to F up.

You must have missed him breathing heavily between rounds too.

I didn't notice it, but that's not unusual anyway.

I don't think he has poor stamina, but it's not good either and he's not the type who can sustain a high work rate over the distance. He's talked about gassing in multiple fights (e.g. Chilemba, Boone I, Beterbiev in the amateurs) and even when he blew out Cleverly I thought it looked like he was starting to flag right before he hurt him in the third. I haven't seen the Boone and Beterbiev fights, but neither Chilemba nor Cleverly landed many body punches, suggesting that there were other reasons for Kovalev slowing.

In my opinion he didn't look too bothered by anything Ward landed, and even if body shots were a large portion of Ward's connects not too many were actually landing. They may have had something to do with Kovalev not doing as well in the second half, but that's certainly not obvious and there are other feasible explanations.

I've only watched it once but i remember being worried that he was running out of steam at one point.

Only watched it once myself, my only worries were the judges.

Kovalev's never had any noticeable stamina issues that I've noticed.

Kovalev never gassed out in any fight... He was more active, finished stronger, threw more punches, landed more punches, and was the aggressor most of the way versus Ward.. He was most concerned about Ward butting a cut open on his eyes.. That's why he moved his head away very deliberately and did everything to keep Ward's head off him...and the referee was not helping him or warning Ward for illegal use of the head.

The idea that Kovalev gassed against the inept Clevery is completely ridiculous... He outboxed Cleverly as he pleased and pounded him with ease.. The fight was over after 3 rounds as the nearly unconscious Cleverly was carried back to his corner by the referee.. They should NOT have let him come out for the 4th -- because he was losing every round very badly and was at risk for serious head trauma.. It was obvious he was going to be stopped in the 4th if he came out.

I think it is more motivation or concentration issue than stamina issue. When beating somebody with ease, he loses motivation and/or concentration. Sometimes it even happens before a fight when an opponent doesn't seem to pose a serious danger. Sergey himself accepted that he has had this issue even in his early amateur years. He wasn't in the right mental state during the Chilemba fight and he lost motivation/concentration after dominating Ward early and dropping him in the 2nd round. He still clearly won both of those fights.
