"David Haye faces punishment after branding Liverpool crowd "f****** retards" during press conference"

David Haye will likely be punished for his use of the term "f****** retards" as he lashed out at fans of his opponent Tony Bellew during a highly charged press conference in Liverpool.

Haye's outburst came after being taunted and jeered by a pro-Bellew crowd in attendance while he was speaking on Monday to promote this Saturday's much anticipated bout at London's O2 Arena.

The build-up to the grudge match has created several negative headlines, starting when Haye threw a punch at Bellew in reaction to being shoved by his foe during another media event in November.

The British Boxing Board of Control were already keeping close tabs on events and will discuss the fighters' conduct at a meeting on March 8, but general secretary Robert Smith admonished Haye for his reaction to being goaded.

"We'll get the fight out of the way and do what we deem necessary. It's not a very good term and shouldn't be used. We are very disappointed with this behaviour," Smith told The Sun.

"There had been lots of comments around this fight already and now this. We take all these matters very seriously.

"I have conversations with all the parties involved with regard to the further lead-up to the contest.

"They had all been warned already and I reiterate that warning. It so happens that we have a board meeting next Wednesday when this will be discussed."

The Board have the power to suspend Haye's licence but a fine is more likely.

Dereck Chisora was fined £25,000 for throwing a table at Dillian Whyte ahead of their rematch last December.

And Tyson Fury was fined £15,000 foe an expletive-laden rant at a press conference in 2014.

What were they even doing at a Press Conference if they are not press? The promoter should also get whatever punishment is dished out for allowing/inticing the situation.

A heavy-handed approach by the BBB of C. It's important that everything is taken in to consideration so hat everything is taken in the right context. The situation at the time was very heated and there was a lot of pantomime-like howling and jeering at Haye. And he simply responded.

If Haye is to be punished, (though in my view a public apology to those he offended would be sufficient) then I truly concur with another member;

Eddie Hearn should be fined for manufacturing such a situation. For want of a better term - that was merely a mob of scousers whose sole purpose there was to heckle and jeer the Londoner.

It's unusually rare to see The Hayemaker lose his cool. Usually he's quite an eloquent fellow, but he lost it a bit there. I found it endearing.

Not at all.. No problem with him swearing or shouting at the fans but using words that imply mental health problems isn't in great taste.
