The BANTAMWEIGHT game: *GAME CLOSED*

Posted: 01 Mar 2017, 09:09
by Crease
Our Seventh thread in the series, following the success of the Heavyweight, Light Heavyweight, Middleweight, Welterweight, Lightweight & Featherweight threads...

This is a game which will be decided by the wisdom of the crowd.

Each of us has our own opinions on who was better than who, or which achievement was greater than others.
But let's bring it all together and allow simple mathematics to decide it all.

The game is this, each poster names and ranks his Top 10 Bantamweights of all time and with each ranking comes a certain number of points.
First place gets 10 points, tenth place gets 1 point - and everything fits in between.

Posters are NOT allowed to edit their posts or change their minds as it will effect the overall accumulated points for each fighter.

I will keep a track of the total scoring each time I'm online. This game has a 30-day deadline, after 30 days - the final points totals will be decided.
Our deadline day will be April 1st.

Bantamweights

1. Fighting Harada
2. Eder Jofre
3. Ruben Olivares
4. Orlando CaƱizales
5. Manuel Ortiz
6. Panama Al Brown
7. Carlos Zarate
8. Alfonso Zamora
9. Jeff Chandler
10. Kid Williams
11. Peter Buckley (32-256-12) - Stopped only ten times over 256 losses - for a 'Knocked Out' percentage of only 0.039% - once went 88 straight fights without a win - ended his story career (fight 300) with a fourth round PST victory; he knew when to hang them up.

Ambivalent as to where to place Johnny Tapia, bantamweight or flyweight - one hell of a career at Super Flyweight. - The damn super and junior weight classes really didn't prove a problem until we got down to Lightweights - now with LW/FW/BW it seems many a great fighter falls between the cracks (weight classes). :brick:

This is my list of all time greatest bantamweights:
1. Eder Jofre
2. Panama Al Brown
3. Carlos Zarate
4. Terry McGovern
5. Manuel Ortiz
6. Ruben Olivares
7. Fighting Harada
8. Jimmy Barry
9. George Dixon
10. Pete "Kid" Herman

I think I have it something like that. But, to me, Jofre and Brown should be top two.

The bantamweights and middleweights, to me, were the most difficult weight classifications to put a decent list. There are too much talented guys in those two divisions.

Teerapol Samranklang aka Veeraphol Nakornluang aka Veeraphol Sahaprom: 18 title fights, lost his title to a Japanese fighter in Japan by decision - good inclusion - I am ignorant of anything/everybody in the fight game after 1995 - thanks for the education.

Just missed the list: McGovern, Herman, Chandler, Herrera

Marquez may be a idiosyncratic choice but he was a damn terrific bantamweight for a solid 5 year stretch in the early 2000s, and a personal favourite.

Down to 10 voters - I figured it would wain - I myself will probably bailout come the flyweights - the only names I know are Tapia and Carbajal, and after listing them, (and they probably don't belong there) all I would end up doing is cutting and pasting the names of eight Thai fighter, (whose names I can't spell or pronounce.)

It can't be. The bantamweights are one of the most exciting weight classes in history.

I'm in no position to vote in any of the weight classes, there's no point as I have no knowledge of any fighters before 1950 and not much 1950-1970
