a lot of threads are mentioning the olympic boxing tourney. this makes it a bit difficult to follow what everyones thinking so ive had a wee idea... lets just have on thread and try to keep all our olympic thoughts here!!

what about making this a sticky for the wee while that the boxing is running?

I havent seen too much of it so far. as ive said on another thread i was impressed by Andy Lee although I did think his mexican opponent was a little one dimensional but take nothing away from Lee he boxed very well, though his lapses in concentration were a bit of a worry.

form the couple of rounds i caught of one of the other bouts it looked a cracker where Javid Taghiyev from azerbijan (i think) beat the greek guy Georgios Gazis 32-31 in the last few seconds

Also noted that the subject of another post, new zealander Soulan Pownceby who was convicted of manslaughter after killing his 5 month old daughter was stopped in the 3rd by Ihsan Tarhan of turkey

Well, from what I have seen I think there should be some kind of overhaul of the current qualification system. I saw a Supermiddleweight (?) bout between a fighter from China and a fighter from Cameroon and I was frankly shocked and dissapointed at the standard of these two. They were wailing away, mostly slapping and not hitting correctly.

How are these guys allowed to box in the Olympics when there are good fighters from Britain not.

I do think the system needs to be relaxed somewhat - the Olympic football competition has been going on for a week now, I think more boxers should be allowed to take part and make the tornament should be a week longer.

I know you are talking general, but in the divison you are talking about, light heavyweight, both the boxer from Wales and England were lost their first matches in all 3 qualification tournaments this year, no boxers from Scotland or N. Ireland

Can anyone answer a couple of questions:

1. Can the fighters/ cornermen see the scores? By the suprised look on some of the fighter's faces at the decision I guess they can't but can the cornermen? I went to the boxing at the Sydney Olympics, and I couldn't see the score but to be honest I couldn't see much from the back row...

2. It seems that you don't get any extra points for a knockdown, just the point you get anyway for the clean punch. Is that right?

Thanks in advance :TU:

You cant see the score in the boxing venue.
A knockdown doesnt give any extra points. It can be a disadventage to score a knockdown since the time still counts so if youu are behind with few seconds left, light punchers can be better

Do the fighters from the African nations and Asia have to undergo the same toruments as the Brits/European. I've always had the impression they try to make an even number across the five continents.

If the Chinese and Cameroon fighters I mentioned qualified via the same toruments as the Brits failed then I appologise to them, however we need some sort of overhaul in British Amateur boxers - those two were poor in my opinion.

They dont compete in the same tournaments as the europeans. The 5 continents have their own qualification tournament.

The chinese won a silvermedal at the asian championships this year

And I would say the Asia and African qualification tornements are a bit easier than the European. Surely there were better fighters than these who have not made it - whether they were European or from any of the other continents.

Also, the Mexican fighters have looked dissapointing on the whole - When I saw them fighting I thought "if they were any good, they would have turned proffesional years before". Through what system does the Mexican fighters qualify.

Europe is the continent with most qualifing spots, its not like that all 5 continents have the same amount of spots, ie- Oceania only has 1 spot in each division.

Mexico qualifies in the "americas" tournaments, so they qualify in the same tournaments as USA, Cuba, the carribian and all of the south and latin american countries.

Cheers for that, I didn't realise that - I thought the USA were allowed one entry per weight class (USA champs winner), I thought the same for the Cubans. So I take that back about the Mexican fighters, it must be their opponents making them look poor.

Sorry to be a pain, does this mean that a mexican has taken the place of a fighter from Cuba or USA. Could there be more than one USA fighter per weight class (i.e. is there another way that the Yanks can qualify).

Whilst they try to make things even, I still think it is easier to be ranked #1 in Oceania than say #5 in Europe.

Each continent have 3 tournaments where you can qualify (Oceania only 1) and its often the finallist that qualify (it was top 4 in the euroes).
USA only have 9 fighters at these olympics (11 divisions) Cuban has a full team. In most divisions Americas has around 6 spots were Europe will have a couple more. But it is also different from weight to weight. In super heavy Europe has 7 spots out of 16, while europe only has 8 spots in light flyweight out of 30.

Clearly its more easy to qualify from the oceanian group. 9 of the 11 are australians.

There can only be 1 from each country in each division

Are they any New Zealanders in the Oceania group? I would like to see an upsurge in there national boxing, they have produced some decent fighters over the years but have struggle badly lately to make an impression on the world scene.

There were one from New Zealand this year. He was the one that killed his own 5 month old daughter. He got outclassed in vs a turk yesterday.
The last one from Oceania is a super heavyweight from Tonga

Killed his own daughter? Wow never heard about that...the only recognisable NZ Boxer is upcoming Shane Cameron at Heavyweight. He's unbeaten as a pro but don't know how far he will progress...then there's David Tua of course and Maselino Masoe but both have originally come from Pacific Islands.

The ref costed the guy from Haiti his fight against the Frenchman. He needed to guy inside the tall frenchman and everytime he did he hammered him, the ref kept breaking them up for the stupidists things and had to try and work his way inside again and lost because of it.

The Haitian Berto was fighting in sperts though left hook, pacing himself for bursts of punches, i thought Noel's cleaner classier work won it for him. Don't know if he will be a sufficient threat for the medals though. I don't normally watch Amateur Boxing too much but i am really getting into this tournament! I can't wait for tomorrow's installment.

From today's Welterweight action i enjoyed the Husanov-Prada fight, although Husanov looked knackered at the end! Steve Holdsworth's commentary was a bit poor tonight though i thought tonight, he was a bit harsh on the Lithuanian Jasevicius, after only 30 seconds of action he was saying how he looked poor and that Bashirov had an easy night ahead...then he was constantly bleating on how he couldn't realise how this guy had qualified, i've seen much worse fighters :o

His statements were too outlandish, in the first round claiming fight's were "over all ready" and that "so and so looks poor and has no chance", "he could win this fight but of course he won't" is what he said during Di Rocco-Rojas and Rojas was winning on points at the time!

There have been 47 fights so far, with 29 shown on danish tv (incl eurosport)

The reason they started early was because weightlifting ended early.

So has anyone got any idea yet what Eurosport are showing at 12.15am, it says "Boxing" but has no description of exactly what.

On my program it says Welterweight, so they will probably show the the two welter fights they havent shown and then 1 lightwelter fight.
