Derry Mathews has confirmed his retirement from boxing.

The likeable Liverpudlian was stopped inside three rounds at the O2 Arena on Saturday, exclusively live on Sky Sports Box Office.

Mathews, who leaves the ring with a record of 38-12-2 with 20 KOs, challenged Ohara Davies for the Hackney super-lightweight’s WBC Silver title.

He said in the aftermath, to Sky Sports, that “that’s the end.”

But in an emotional interview after his fight with the Liverpool ECHO, Mathews went further into his decision. “Even if I had won this fight, I would still know if it was time to retire," Mathews told the ECHO.

"And Danny [Vaughan, his trainer] has said as well so...."

"It's everything," he added. "Your timing, the niggles you get in the gym, we had to adjust my training, adjust stuff we did on the track, it was just everything."

I sparred Derry at times when we were both at Oliver Harrison's gym, a really nice genuine guy with a good boxing brain who was always willing to offer advice and experience. All the best for the future Derry, I hope you stay involved in the sport, you will make a great coach! :TU:

Been an absolute pleasure watching his career from the early stages (apart from the Simpson fight). Proper fighting man. Some massive wins and he can only look back with pride. Kept bouncing back when it looked as if it was the end of the road.

All the best Derry :TU:

Always comes across as a good bloke, I wish him all the best.

Think he opened his own gym recently, which is good to see, he has plenty of experience that he could pass on to young fighters.

We often talk about legends in the context of being a true world great, but in his own way Derry's a legend. Epitomizes everything great about the game and wish him all the best for the future.

All the best Derry, great career. The Crolla fights were especially good, and the Coyle comeback was unforgettable.

Kept surprising us with bloody good fights often coming after seeious setbacks.

The most compelling domestic warrior of recent years.

But, clearly the end after Davis and the Hull lad.

HArd earned retirement, best wishes to the man.

It's a shame. He has had a great career and is a skilled fighter. But I noticed his speed has declined in that last fight, but what a great journeyman he would make on a domestic level. An up and coming chap would learn a lot from 8 rounds with Derry, maybe even lose to him.
