Trying to learn more about the boxers from before my time.

While trying to figure it out, I found a Joe Lewis quote that is an interesting pairing:

This came from an interview I read from Gene Tunney in the 1960's... I used to subscribe to Ring, Boxing Illustrated, KO Magazine, Sport, Sports Illustrated, and many other publications about sports of all kinds... I particularly loved to read interviews because boxers would often be asked about their training secrets, fighting secrets, and philosophical, psychological and motivational proclivities.. Things that drove them to become the men they were.. I've always loved to read autobiographical books of all kinds of people..

I found Tunney to be one of the most interesting characters I ever read about. Tunney said in his book "Arms for Living" that he forced himself to gaze at the sun to increase his willpower. "I knew I was damaging my eyes, but I knew developing my will to the utmost overrode everything else." I thought "This mother fker is crazy" He would also remove every match from a box of matches and line them up in a certain way, and then put them back in the box one by one to increase his focus and concentration, and do other exercises to increase his will.

His face was cut to shreds early in his first Greb fight and his nose broken in 3 places. He couldn't make Greb out at times because of the blood, and his corner could not stem the flow because an artery was sliced, but he lasted through 15 rounds, never going down, because of his will. His only goal following the fight was to beat Greb -- which he did repeatedly until Greb would no longer fight him.

From the "Arms for Living" book: He knew Dempsey was the coming world champion when Willard owned the title and asked fight people about Dempsey. "He's a big Jack Dillon" they told him, and he started devising a strategy to beat Dempsey many years before he met him. He fought on the same card as Dempsey-Carpentier, and stole close to the ring to scout Dempsey. He found a spot in a neutral corner where he crouched down and saw Carpentier nail Dempsey with a right driven straight down the pike. That confirmed his strategy that this was the way to beat the crouching, weaving, and swinging Dempsey. Sting him with jabs, whistle rights straight at him with no preliminary feints, and follow up with every punch in the book. He was a little concerned that the fight was a 10-rounder instead of 15, but at least the first fight was much easier than he ever expected, and the money was bigger than he ever dreamed. It was a match-up that was pure magic because of Tunney's reputation for conceit, bookishness, and intellectual pretense -- and Dempsey's raw savagery, charismatic popularity, and mythical punching power.
