Gennady Golovkin’s close decision win over Daniel Jacobs reportedly drew no more than 150,000 buys, the same mark as his PPV debut vs. David Lemieux.

Gennady Golovkin’s (37-0, 33 KOs) 23-fight KO streak ended, but his undefeated record stayed intact with last Saturday’s close unanimous decision win over Daniel Jacobs (32-2, 29 KOs). This was GGG’s second appearance as an HBO pay-per-view headliner, and it doesn’t look as if there was any improvement in terms of total buys from his previous PPV. Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times has the early details on the estimates.

We know gate revenue at @TheGarden was $3.7 million, higher than $2 million for Lemieux, that @GGGBoxing merchandise, sponsors also higher.

If these numbers prove to be true, 150,000 would match his buyrate from the David Lemieux bout in October 2015. Golovkin’s promoter, Tom Loeffler, never gave out specific buyrate projections, but did expect the Jacobs fight to exceed the Lemieux numbers, and early signs are that it didn’t. For what it’s worth, Golovkin’s team still does expect the final tally to be higher than 150k.

Have to say, the $3.7m gate over achieved. Which balances things out a little.

Might not. Golovkin doesn't really have a big built-in fan base like Canelo or Cotto, and the Lemieux fight only did 150k. I thought a fight with Jacobs would do something in the 200-300k range just because it was #1 vs. #2 in the MW division, but it's possible it underperformed. Jacobs is really only a big draw in NY, much like Lemieux is in Montreal.

Explains the gate did so well. which is a good sign

GGG has a pretty big NY fan base as well. I went to one of his fights a long time ago (against Rosado, I think) and was surprised at how many Kazakh flags there were in the crowd. It's possible there is a big Kazakh expat community in NY.

Didn't Pugmire also report 75k for Lemieux? I'm pretty sure that's the number he was putting out at one time.

150k-200k is what I was expecting for this

75k was the real, non inflated by the money-laundering mafia, numbers.
Which means the final numbers for the Jacobs fight will go from 150k to around 230k.

I'm waiting for the official results, does that normally take a couple weeks? I'd be pretty disappointed for team Golovkin if it did 150. I don't know what else the public would want out of a fighter.

If it doesn't supercede the Lemieux numbers, Golovkin and his team are going to have to accept the current Canelo offer from Golden Boy or its unlikely the fight will happen.

That doesn't really correlate with commercial success though. Look at the numbers that Kovalev and Ward did. It's only really Canelo, Pacquaio, Cotto and Joshua who are legitimate big draws in boxing. (you can add Floyd into that aswell but for now he's retired) Mcgregor despite not being a boxer could also probably draw bigger numbers than a lot of boxers and I'm talking about him boxing aswell, not MMA. Even if he wasn't fighting Floyd in a boxing match but somebody else, he'd still probably draw pretty big numbers I think.
