"Boy, 17, dies after amateur boxing match in Derbyshire"

A 17-year-old boy has died following an amateur boxing match.

The teenager, from Ripley, Derbyshire, collapsed in the ring at the Postmill Centre, South Normanton, on Friday evening and later died at Kingsmill hospital.

A Derbyshire police spokeswoman said officers were not treating his death as suspicious at this stage.


A post-mortem examination and formal identification will take place in the coming days.

The South Normanton School of Boxing were the promoters of the amateur tournament at the conference centre, in Market Street.

Police arrived at about 10:17 GMT following reports a youth had collapsed in the ring.

The force said it was investigating on behalf of the coroner and have appealed for any footage of the bout to be shared as part of their investigation.

Very secondary to the above, but why will formal identification be “in a few days”?

I would also rather they said 10.17 or 22.17....rather than the utterly pointless use of GMT. It was in England....it’s on BBC news! What other f*cking 10.17 would it be?

As I say, all pales into insignificance in light of this tragic death.

The BBC article says 22.17 GMT, so it's either been edited after being first printed or the OP chose to edit himself for some reason. Either way, it's obviously not important. RIP to this young man.

Nope, I copied it how it is. It does say the article was updated less than hour ago. They may have amended it themselves.

Well, some people take note of the way something gets put over in print. The message and the delivery are two separate things though, and - as has been emphasized - one pales in significance when compared to the other.
Obviously. Noone is saying this is anything other than...shocking really. The worst nightmare. I think all of us are sparing a thought for this boy’s family.

Really tragic. This is often the result of an undiagnosed heart condition.

Perhaps ECG/MRI tests needs to become more 'as standard' to safeguard athletes pushing themselves hard.

Poor guy RIP.
