England's Scott Quigg will face Romania's Viorel Simion on the Anthony Joshua vs. Wladimir Klitschko super show at London's Wembley Stadium on April 29th. Quigg, a former WBA 122-pound titlist now campaigning at 126 pounds, will have trainer Freddie Roach in his corner for the first time as he takes on Simion. Quigg is 32-1-2, including one win since losing his title to Carl Frampton last year. Simion is 21-1 with the lone loss to Lee Selby in 2013. (Selby went on to win the IBF featherweight championship).
Quigg is gunning for a shot at becoming a two-weight champion, and he believes that a big win in his first ever stadium fight will put him at the front of the queue. “This is a fight I’m really looking forward to,” said Quigg. “It’s my first fight working with Freddie and training team and it’s a fight that will catapult me right in the mix for a World title fight.
“Simion is an experienced, skilful and strong fighter and his only blemish on his record is against the current IBF champion Lee Selby, who he pushed all the way. I’m expecting and preparing for a very tough fight but one I’m very confident in and expect to put in the best performance of my career and put myself in line for shot at one of the champions.
“Training camp couldn’t be going any better. The switch out to L.A has been a breath of fresh air. The change of environment working with Freddie and the quality of sparring has really freshened things up and I’m excited to show the improvements made on such a massive platform at Wembley stadium.”
Quigg’s desire to box for world honors at 126 pounds could be boosted ahead of the fight as his promoter Eddie Hearn is looking to get the bout official eliminator status. “This is a great fight for Scott and the last hurdle before he hunts his second World title,” said Hearn. “Simion gave Selby a great fight on our Hull show a few years back and is an all action fighter that will bring the heat on April 29th.
“Because of both fighters’ rankings, we are looking to apply to the WBA or the IBF to make this fight an official eliminator for the world title and if victorious I expect Scott’s next fight to be for a featherweight world crown.”
Quigg’s clash with Simion is the first undercard fight confirmed for the sold-out blockbuster battle between IBF heavyweight king Joshua and former lineal world ruler Klitschko, with the WBA strap also up for grabs.

I think this fight is fair enough for scott.
Simion still ranked top 15 and he bet miskirtchian last yr so hes still considered a good fw. Scotts with a new team and there hasnt been enough time yet to fully bed themselves in.
Im happy enough with this matchup

Broadhurst said he's got news coming today. He got left out of the Brum show. Maybe Eddie has his eyes on that fight with Yafai...

Simion is a solid enough euro level guy, not a terrible opponent for someone new to a weight division.
I remember him given Selby a decent workout a few years back

Broadhurst was on that Brum show till the day of the presser. I honestly think Eddie was genuinely going to put him against Yafai. Hopefully it was the backlash on here that put him off.

Not a terrible fight but it doesn't exactly set the pulses racing does it? Especially for what will probably be chief support. Would have been good to see Eddie really push to bring an Abner Mares type over here but with the inevitably huge PPV numbers based on the main event alone he's under no pressure whatsoever to provide anything resembling a good under card. Said it before and I'l say it again, the chief support for a PPV should be good enough to headline it's own Saturday Fight Night. Hearn and Sky will be making massive money from this and I'm not seeing it be reinvested to give us better fights across the board. Anything decent is still lashed on PPV with piss poor under cards.

It is what it is ,,, Its a look Scott , we can't pay you much, but what we can do is get you a win , while at the same time we can elevate you up on the world scene has a featherweight , we can get you the fight you desperatly need , we get your name on the show , and its a win win , But we just can't pay you top dollar ... And really Scott what else have you got, after all why would American promoters do this for you ..
So come on Scott do this for us ,and who knows , if you come through with flying colors i'm sure we can market you has unbeatable at this new weight and make you ppv ,, Only thing is Scott , we can't pay you too much . But Scott its a win win fight

Why?
It's this sort of thing that makes me think some boxing fans just don't want to understand the business aspect of the sport. 99.9% of everyone watching this card are watching it for one fight only, and that fight costs a bomb to put on. Sticking more money into an undercard that won't make any difference to the night is pretty much meaningless.
Look, I love boxing and I'd love every card to be packed, and in a case like Joshua Molina, (a PPV with a mismatch main event) I can understand why they want a decent card, which in fairness, they had. This time? It was just never going to happen.

I understand the business aspect of the sport and acknowledged that Hearn was under no pressure for this under card. But at the end of the day I'm a boxing fan, my priority is seeing good fights.
"an undercard that won't make any difference to the night" - Why don't better fights make any difference to the night? It'll make a difference to my night because good fights are what I want to see. And you're not taking home any of the PPV money so it should make a difference to yours as well. It might not make a difference to Hearn's night or his PPV numbers, but as a boxing fan my primary concern is seeing good fights, not seeing Hearn line his pockets and not reinvest it into better cards.

I'm fairly sure that Viorel Simeon was what The AIDS used to be called when it was thought to have developed in monkeys.

Why does all the money go back to Hearn? The money generated on the night has to go to a lot of different places, including renting Wembley itself, logistical spend, VAT, security, and not least the cash you need to get Wlad over here. Granted the majority goes back to Sky, but to repeat the point, when all the tickets have been sold and nearly everyone is there for one fight only, do you look to keep profits as they stand or spend more money?
We're obviously at similar positions in that a night of great fights is better than a crap undercard, but I'm aware of the approach from 'hardcore' fans and the reality that in cases like this they essentially don't come into any serious equation.
