A former sparring partner of Lennox Lewis has vowed to sue Tesco for alleged racism and unfair dismissal after being cleared of attacking a customer.
Terry Duffus, 43, was sacked from his post as a security guard with the supermarket giant after he hit abusive customer Daniel Hodges in October last year, breaking his jaw.
Duffus told Gloucester Crown Court he had acted in self-defence - and after just four minutes of deliberations, the jury agreed with him, clearing him of grievous bodily harm.
He had explained to the court he had hit back during the latest in a series of "Friday night rituals" where Hodges and his mates visited the Cheltenham store to racially abuse him.
The former pro, who sparred with Lennox Lewis early in Lennox's career, plans to start unfair dismissal proceedings next week. "I believe Tesco are institutionally racist, and that there was a collective failure of responsibility.
"The letter dismissing me said 'We are a retail store, not a nightclub.'"
Duffus told the court Hodges had made to hit him, and spoke of the aggro that came with the job: "On my very first night I was attacked with a bottle.
"They were stealing to order. One Monday a junkie came in and nicked £200 worth of DVDs and another time I had a knife pulled on me.
"Night guard is the most hostile job going."
A spokesman for Tesco said: "Terry Duffus was a good security guard and an asset to the store, but was dismissed after attacking a customer and breaking his jaw.
"After a full investigation into the incident his dismissal was upheld."

I worked for Sainsbury's when I was a student and some customers think they can have a go at you because they know you can't say anything back. If anyone had a pop at me, I used to tell them to fornicate off.
In the end, the manager stuck me in the warehouse.

If there's one thing that really pisses me off it's exactly that. People who know the basics of the law and know that you can't do much back because you'd lose your job etc.

Worst example are spineless teenagers who feel they have the right to throw bottles or stones at you and know that if you hit them back then you are asking for trouble because they are under 16.

Depends if the lads were rolling up and calling him a lot of racist names, Loftgroov. Then it would be a criminal offence happening to one of Tesco's employees on Tesco's property.

It would be their responsibility to do something about it and if they did fornicate all, well...

I wish the big man had gone mental and smashed all of the vermin up.

exactly, one can assume there was extensive CCTV evidence

Most customers are really great in supermarkets (I tell you what, I work with nurses, but you'll never get more shags than in a supermarket). But you do get one or two coming in looking to have a pop for no reason in the belief they can get away with it. Those dickheads never really bothered me. It was the ones who'd had a hard day at work and were looking to take it out on you, they were the ones who got it right back.

Yeah supermarket rage is rife these days by the sound of it.

There's just so many sad bastards around, men and women, looking ready to rip some major shit up just because they have to que for a few minutes. I feel sorry for the checkout people. No way would I ever work directly for the public, not in this country anyway.

I swear to God, you see it all in a supermarket. I saw people fighting over parking spaces, throwing cans at each other, slamming trolleys into each other. It was totally hilarious.
Most people, as I say, are nice and normal.

ido agree, no-one likes hanging around waiting but after thousands of years of modern society we still havent worked out a better system.

Its no-one fault, a necessary evil so just grin and bear it, oh and smile!

In the States, I believe they have some stores where you scan the barcode yourself as you choose an item, then just pay your bill at the end.
An alarm goes off if you try and leave the store with unscanned items.

You can pay like that in the Marks & Spencer food shop in Canary Wharf. It feels pretty weird the first time.
